  • I'm with keith on this point - payback calculations don't include timevalue of money. Agreed that this isn't the best way to analyse the return from solar, but it is one way. It is what it is.

    Hi

I agree too, that's what the book definition says, but it's not the way I would have done it when managing £million(s) annual budget with complex capex justifications and I doubt that any serious money is spent in the private sector on a straight payback basis ..... payback and ROI based on TCO is what I'm used to and it would take a lot to convince me that what works on a professional basis shouldn't be applied to personal expenditure too.

If I was out shopping and saw something which wasn't too expensive which would save me money I would use a little mental arithmatic to calculate whether it was worthwhile buying and this would be on a straight payback basis (cost/saving.y) because it's easy and the exposure risk is low, but for something costing anything near pv price levels I'd certainly be a lot more careful.

Anyone is free to justify their own expenditure on whatever basis they prefer and it's entirely up to them .... all they should be aware of is that simplistic payback is well known to be a flawed methodology (a quick web search would confirm this) and therefore any calculated financial return information provided by the industry on this basis should be treated with caution, especially as it would vary considerably depending on how the particular installation is to be financed ....

I would add that the 'payback calculator' programs for PV take into account the cost of borrowing, or loss of interest.

Quite seriously, if you borrowed £10,000 @ 5% to buy a PV system that gave an income of £500pa would you calculate payback as 20 years?
  • I've had this discussion -sort of with my OH - as we are funding ours out of premium bonds. My head is spinning simply trying to get round the idea of how to work out our possible returns. (Our system is not installed for another fortnight).
  • Looking for sub £10K quotes (if possible) for
    Suntech BlackPearl STP250S-20/Wd x 16 sunny boy 4000tl 4Kw
    Hyundai HiS-S250MG x 16 sunny boy 4000tl 4Kw
    Samsung LPC247SM-06 x 16 sunny boy 4000tl 3.96Kw

Any suggestions /recommendations for suppliers in Somerset.

No but then I don't believe that anyone has actually claimed that.

If you care to go back and read the original poster's comments where this question of a 'payback period' started you will find that there was never any mention of money being borrowed to fund the installation. That was something you added into the mix to try and add weight to the point you were trying to make.

As always, I will leave it up to the original poster to decide what he/she feels is the best way to determine the 'payback period' for their own personal circumstances.

The notional interest rate on Premium Bonds is currently 1.5% - see http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/premium-bonds but the effective interest rate is lower, about 1% on £10,000 of bonds, so if you want to factor in loss of interest, you could use this figure (but then again you could get more than 1% elsewhere).

can anyone who has had an installation by Solar style ltd of Retford please confirm they are a bona fide company, i have signed with them but now having grave doubts. thanks
  • Hyundai 250w panels - are they any good?

One supplier recommends for relative value and better quality than the Sharps that Tesco and others are offering as standard.

    What's a reasonable price for a 4kw system?

    thanks

Directors seem to be farmers and home improvements backgrounds. If it makes you feel any better, one of the Directors of Solar Style Ltd of Retford is Kevin McDonald OBE, although aged 73, is also a director of Crimestoppers, so one would hope he wouldn't condone anything dodgy!
