Some of these comments above make me laugh :)

You'd have to be really fussy, IMO, to think that any recording length other than the top 1 or 2 are any good. I bought this unit myself earlier this year and I think it's superb. A normal 4.7GB DVD will give you between 1 and 8 hours recording depending on the quality level you set the recordings at. Having used it to record once or twice a week, I definitely agree with 'What Hi-Fi' - the quality at any level other than 'extended play' (8 hours) is very good indeed. Even the 8 hour EP mode is good - probably comparable to VHS recordings. Not saying I'd use that setting mind ;)

The playback of pre-recorded titles is of a very high standard, and DVD soundtracks are very good. The unit's not great with CDs but unless you're an audiophile you wouldn't be able to tell - it's perfectly adequate as a CD player if you're not that fussy.

The DVD-RAMs are fantastically versatile when recording with this machine - allowing you to edit your titles so accurately that you can erase fractions of seconds off recordings. Brilliant for when I've recorded myself series 6 of the Sopranos, for example - you can edit the titles so finely that you can't even tell it's recorded from the TV (except, of course, for the E4 DOG in the corner of the screen  ).

My only real criticism is its length of time to respond when switching the machine on and wanting to play straight away - it's way behind the competition on that score. The time it takes to eject a disc when first switching the machine on is irritating as well...for example, if you want to put in Band of Brothers and you know that the kids have left Mary Poppins in there, it seems to take an age to switch on and eject dear old Ms Andrews.

Overall I'd say it's an excellent machine, a real bargain at Richer's price and they're a customer service focussed company so you can't go wrong with them in my experience.

    Go for it :j

have the same machine and these mirror my thoughts...

it's a good piece of kit...
  • alo very happy with my panasonic DMRES 20 with free-view and Richer Sounds also made it region free for me for only £10 more.

    good machines the Panasonics.....

guys, on a side note, can anyone tell me if these machines UPSAMPLE standard definition DVDs??? I currently have a 26" JVC tube tv and am thinking about stumping up for a 37 or 40" LCD and am wondering if I need to buy a new DVD player that upsamples to ensure good picture quality on the bigger screen?

    thanks

Some of these come region free, however these seem to be R2 only (as it says in the argos desciption and richer sounds usually advertise DVD players/recorders as multi region if they are).

If they are R2 coded beware, you need a special chipped remote to unlock them, see

or ring up richer sounds to see if they can unlock it for you.

I suspect you are talking about "upscaling", in which case these do not I'm afraid. However, they do provide component video out and used with a flat screen and a decent component cable, the Panasonic I have does produce excellent results. Hope this helps.
Forgot to mention sorry, that is with my 40" LCD Sony tv.

Yep, that's the same one. Been on the Argos site for a couple of months now but never managed to find stock anywhere in the South East. Great price if you can find it though.

It's actually much better than the DMRES15 which replaced it as it does 'RGB in' which the new one doesn't!

It's been that price at Argos for at least six months as it was that when I got one.
  • I have the E55 , which again is an older model, bought it around 2 years ago for £165, I regularly use it to archive Sky recordings (footie, films etc) and can report not a single failed disc in several hundred recorded.

Quality wise, I regularly record 3 1/2 to 4 hours on a standard DVD-R and there is no noticable quality loss due to compression. **Edited to add that I view on a 42" Plasma, so quality problems would be very nioticable**

When mine breaks I would not consider any other make.

  • I have a DMRES10 and although it's an older model I'm really pleased with it. I bought mine multi-regional from Richer Sounds.
