I would force them to stick to what they've offered you, as well. I am sure you must be legally entitled to it. Don't forget, you could have turned down much more attractive offers to work for them, as you chose this job (out of the glittering array which you were offered, as far as they are concerned) based on the salary in the letter which they wrote you!
