Most areas of the country now broadcast a few channels in high definition (HD). You need a HD tuner in order to view these channels, so no HD tuner means you have a standard freeview tuner.

HD is a format, and multiple sources output HD such as the XBOX360 / Bluray players / SkyHD box etc. You need a HD TV in order to display a HD resolution.

A freeview HD tuner isn't important unless you want the four-or-so HD channels, and even if you changed your mind at a later date you can buy a freeviewHD tuner separately.
