  • You are right Ineedaname, something I've previously worked on in my professional career. My dog is highly trained (by me!) to aid me during panic and ashma attacks. I trained my sisters dog to support her with tasks/emergencies related to her MS - she just couldn't wait for the length of time it was going to take to get one from a charity. I'm fully supportive of assistive pets and understand completely how your dogs have helped you

  • Just had the council on the phone, I'm going to look at a flat at lunchtime. Had a look on Google Maps at the area, and it looks very positive, the flat description is positive too. Temp tenancy as is response to homeless application, but our council do some wierd thing where if all goes well, they offer to convert it to perminant after a year.

Fingers crossed, I could have somewhere to live very soon! :j

Ooh, that's brilliant news for you and I do hope they let you take your dog with you.

I know my last post was a bit dreary but I'm so keen for the US assistance 'rules' to rub off over here. We already have assistance dogs for autistic children so it's only one step further. I know a couple of the charities are working on pushing things forward. There are funding issues on top of that though so it'll probably be a good few years before we catch up with the States.

That's brilliant you were able to train your dog so well and also help a friend with her dog. Maybe that could be a future career for you if any of the assistance dog charities are near you?

  • I was offered a 2 bed flat, ground floor with rear small garden and I accepted immediatly. I have 12 months on a temp tenancy, then I get a full perminent one! I just have to hope all the paperwork is OK and get this in writing - I still feel like its going to be snatched away at the last minute

One of the reasons I was offered the flat over the apparnetly other eligable people for it, [according to one of the people involved] because she said she could 'really tell your whole situation is genuine' and that she knew the other people I was up against were 'playing the system', so a panal dicicion was made to offer it to me first.

Its in a right state inside and will take lots of cleaning and decorating, but its 4 walls and a roof and mine lol

After nearly 3 years of absolute hell, new start here I come

If you're at the end of the place to live road, hang on in there, know your housing rights (CAB, Shelter etc), it helped me so much, forums here are great and the very best of luck to you all

    Decorating party anyone?

    Thanks to all of you.

As it's been let in such a state I would ask the council about funding for paint and carpets. I have a friend who did this and the council paid for the paint so she could decorate the house, I think they also paid for basic 'landlord special' type carpets to be laid too.

Even though they are council/housing association I think they still have a responsibility to let the property in a reasonable and livable condition...which may not mean carpetted (you can only ask, they can only say no) but should mean clean paintwork and well repaired!

But it's brilliant news for you anyway, a garden for the dog too, what a bonus.:D:T

As Ineedaname has said, it won't do any harm to ask the council about cleaning / decoration.
When I worked for my local council they had cleaners who would do a deep clean of properties prior to new tenants moving in, if it had been left in a state. These properties were also decorated but I can't remember if carpets were included or not.

But well done you! You can now breathe a huge sigh of relief and start your new life in a lovely new home!
