Edinburgh to Southampton or Bournemouth

Hi can anyone please help, what is the cheapest way to get from Edinburgh to Southampton or Bournemouth?

I have family down south but can't work out what is the cheapest way/quickest way to travel to see them - train or flying - i've been going round and round the internet from one site to another trying to work this out but have just come away with a sore head! :(

Has anyone done this trip and know the best way?

I've put Southampton or Bournemouth because they live nearer to Bournemouth but know there is an airport in Southampton that has a train station next to it so could always get a train from there to Bournemouth or i could get them to pick me up from Bournemouth.

I've tried working out if its quicker to go to London and then coach it to Bournemouth etc. but i just can't work it out - i've tried my hardest but just can't seemed to work it so its not too expensive.

i don't want someone to work it out for me as i would just be coming across as really lazy! i just wondered if anyone out there had actual experience of the same journey.

Thanks for reading. :o

I guess this would be the cheapest http://www.rideshare.co.uk/ There are similar sites offering the same type of service if you Google.
  • Hi polen,

I have the same situation (slightly further along, in Poole!).....

There are flights to southampton from both Edinburgh and Newcastle. Not the cheapest, but not much more than flights to London. So time / cost wise, you're probably best going direct rather than via London if you're doing flights (or flight + train / bus from London).

In terms of trains, you're generally looking at least one change (this doesn't have to be London - I often change in Newcastle). Unless you get very far in advance and fixed times etc, you're looking at least same cost as flying, and obviously longer journeys....

Not much to say on cars, other than the price of petrol is making the journey more and more expensive. But you may have to do this if you have pets you want to take, or if flights / trains are unsuitable....

Hope that helps (some time since your initial query, you've probably found an answer by now anyway!)
