My mum has been offered a small shop in Kesh Co. Fermanagh at an amazingly low rent. She is thinking about opening an ice-cream parlour but that's very seasonal. Seems a good wee village with lots going on (including a big annual festival) but is it worth investing in a wee shop that we need to travel to from Antrim on a regular basis? Any thoughts appeciated.

Kesh is a lovely little village but i'd be mindful that it has at least 2 chinese takaways, i hotel,1 pub supplying food, 1 Praxis owned coffee shop/restaurant,another chip shop type facility and 2 supermarkets. One of the shops used to sell Mauds icecream but has changed hands and may not supply it any more.
Crafts/ sewing /knitting etc may not be her thing but seems to be one of the very few areas showing any real growth and there is a lack of outlets locally.

No reflection on Kesh & even if the was rent was free its unlikely to make you a minimum wage after overheads. Cost of traveling will be £40+/day before rates, lighting, heating, phone, insurance, maintenance, wastage....

OK I really love Kesh, have been going there for many years, here's the but!, It's not only Kesh but could be said of all the wee towns/villages in NI, I agree entirely with bonjovi99. If the locals have failed to make a go of a shop in the area your Mum would need something very unique to make a go of it. Even the wee shop that was Tommy Flynn's right at the bridge has closed again.... Sorry for being negative but you have to be realistic.

Businesses haven't been doing too well in Kesh as of late, the hotel went into administration and the shops are generally very quiet - I personally don't think it's a good move but it's ultimately your choice and good luck with whatever you decide.
