Mortgage payment break

SlightlyDeranged
My husband and I have a joint mortgage with Halifax/Bank of Scotland.
We separated 20 months ago and he chose to move out. He has not paid a single penny towards the mortgage or other costs related to the house since last August. He refuses to enter any discussion with myself or my solicitor with regards to the division of assets etc, so I have been unable to get the house on the market. I work part time and the mortgage is absolutely crippling. I am supporting two of our children through college too. He makes no contribution to that either. I am trying to find more work but after years of raising our children and working part time jobs around them I am not qualified to do anything.
My solicitor has informed the bank of our separation and intention to sell the house. My question is - is it a possibilty that the bank would allow me to pay interest only until the house is sold? Would the house have to be on the market for them to consider it or is it worth while asking now. I know I'd be better asking at the bank but we are in a village with limited access to an adviser at the bank and I will have to take time off work for an appointment.
Apologies if this has been covered already.
