How do you make it work - how do you stick to it? and how can i keep failing when i know all this already!!!!!

When you pick something up with the intention to buy it, say quite forcefully to yourself 'do i really, really need this.
Invariably the answer will be no.
Keep doing it though, every time...........................make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Have a look at the demotivator tool on MSE, works quite well!0

McKneff is right. You need to break the impulse buying. Ask yourself at least twice if you really really need what you have in your basket. Write a list before you go to the supermarket and only buy things on that list.
Try keeping a spending diary as well. You've said it's the odd £10 here and there - I bet you'd be surprised at what you actually spent it on and there's nothing like seeing it in black and white to make you curb your ways.
Do treat yourself every now and then though. Complete denial will only result in a big splurge.0 -
I make sure I come on here every morning when I wake. It reminds me a) how well I'm doing and b) just how bad it can get when you lose your focus. Will keep on doing so till my brain synapses have rerouted in too a naturally MS way.LBM April 2011 £4906

As well as what McKneff said, when you pick up something, say to yourself "I will come back later for it" and put it down (not in your trolley) . Chance are you will forget about it!
Can you cut down on your visits to the supermarket? Or do an online order for the month?
Can you set yourself a certain amount of pocket money for the week and leave the card at home?
I don't take money to work because I go there to earn money not to spend and there is always some way to spend it!LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

Because you are lazy or lack motivation.
Don't take cards or cash out with you. Always make your lunch the night before so it is in the fridge ready.
Set yourself some goals for when you are debt free.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -
While the above is a bit harsh, it is essentially true.
You are having impulse control and if you have it here you probably have it elsewhere in your life.
So, set yoursewlf a budget for the week for cash spending. Take the money out of your acct, and split it into 7 days and put in envelopes. Freeze your debit card in water or put it somewhere else you can't easily get to. Take each envelope out each day with your essential spending. By that I don't mean booze money or lunch out money. I mean bus/train/petrol money, parking money, grocery money etc. If you don't sopend some, you can bring it over to the next day.
If you have made your lunches M-Th and not splurged on anything else, give yourself a small treat on Friday (will help you keep on track if you have something to look forwards to). By that I mean 10 for lunch or a drink after work (ie one).
If you fall behind and spend the next days money you have to do w/o. And so it goes.
Do your spending diary and still see where you are wasting money. How much is your ohine contract? Do you use all your mins? Most don't so switch to the next one down. Look over yoru insurance and utilities. Are you on the cheapest plans? If not change them. All this will free up money.
Apply this money to paying off any debt you have, if you dont' have any save it in an isa or something. Save up for your future or bigger treats.
Do an SOA here now, and fill it out hinestly. Thenwe will help you shave off more.
But as others have said above if you pick something up, ask do you NEED it? If you do, have you checked of you can get it cheaper elsewhere? If the answers are no, do not buy it.0 -
