not sure if right thread but here goes
i just cooked some brown rice, never had it before, is it supposed to be slightly bitty with the husks or should i have cooked it longer?
can you get ill from undercooked rice?

usually not bitty but perhaps more chewy than white rice. i use it most of time and no probs. you wont get ill, its just unpleasant if undercooked. so cook it a bit more, or let the birds have it...0

thanks for that, will not too sure how keen i am on it, but will try again, couldn't believe how cheap a bag is. think the meal i just cooked (brown rice and stir fry veg) prob cost bout 80p (not including the elec for the hob or boiling the kettle) wow

ive not tried microwave rice- is it any good? im slightly wary of the microwave, but i do use it for speed (not the powder)0

Benefits of using Brown RiceThe complete milling and polishing that converts brown rice into white rice destroys 67% of the vitamin B3, 80% of the vitamin B1, 90% of the vitamin B6, half of the manganese, half of the phosphorus, 60% of the iron, and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids.
After rinsing brown rice, add one part rice to two parts boiling water or broth. After the liquid has returned to a boil, turn down the heat, cover and simmer for about 45 minutes.

For speed and ease you can't beat uncle bens micro rice, can often get it 3 for £3, I find a packet is enough for me and OH with veg and meat or 1 packet for just me if i'm not having anything else.
Im gonna try and be healthy at home, so brown rice, wholemeal bread (Organic for a treat), just trying to find big bags of wholemeal pasta but will still use micro rice for work (goes very well with a tin of chicken soup, cheap, tasty, filling)0 -

As I have had SO many rice disasters (can't seem to get it right), I tend to only use Uncle Bens MW rice now. I get it 3 for £3 (always on special at my Sainsburys), and 1 pkt is perfect for OH and me (I eat small porions - so he gets plenty). I think they are great - 2 minutes. Their egg fried rice is not too calorific either!Save the earth, it's the only planet with chocolate!

I only ever eat brown rice and now can't even look at white rice. All I see when I see white rice is BLEACHED rice - YUCK!!!! :eek:TL0

Brown rice can be a little bitty, experiment with different brands if you can. DOn't be fooled by easy cook brown rice as apparently that too has been robbed of most of its goodness.
If you want a softer rice you can soak the rice for 15 mins before cooking it, but to be honest you get used to the difference after a while - and if anything it becomes prefrable to the white. I think the body gets to recognise what is good for it!
