Hi cornish girl, congratulations on your engagement
As a quick guide, have a look at http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/cheaper-weddings. There is also a sticky called wedding tips at the top of the wedding board with some great ideas. I'm still in the early days of planning our wedding so I have found them really helpful.
Whereabouts are you based? Someone may come along and help you find a wedding dress shops in your area. Many shops do have sales/samples that are sold much cheaper, and its always worth haggling to get free alterations or even just a tiara. I'd also recommend checking sites like debenhams and coast. Debenhams has some beautiful dresses that start from £57 which are in the sale. I would say looking for the dress now is important because it may take a while to find 'the one'.
Don't forget about talented friends and family? Is there anyone who can take photographs, make cakes or help with invites?
I'd also start looking at the invitations now. August is popular for holidays so i'd get these out as early as possible. For invitations a lot of people recommend vista print, i'm not too sure how it works (never used them myself, i've luckily got a find who is going to making mine) but have a look at the forums if it is something your interested in.
Good luck, and just take sometime to enjoy planning0

            congratulations!
I get married 15th august and we met the registrar and paid on tuesday.
Have you looked on ebay at dresses. There are alot of BHS dresses (bride and bridesmaid) that are new on there and there is a littlewoods outlet on there. The dresses are much cheaper than in store.
I also got silk flowers from ebay for me and the groom.
We printed our invitations of the internet for free - just put wedding invitations into google and went from there.
Bought OH suit from greenwoods and got his shoes in house of fraser sale today.
We bought a wedding book from there today as well - half price!
We have booked a restaurant for lunch afterwards.
We dont have a photographer but we are giving our camers to a freind who is going to get the photos we want- we will look at him for each photo we want when they are taken.
Sisiter in law is making the cake as she cant make the wedding so its her present to us.
Depends how low key you want things on the day - were having a simple day so much to do xxMum, wife and dinnerlady!0
