Hi
I know this is a long shot but has anyone tried/does anyone know of anything you could use as a cheap hair dye. I tried using cold tea once without much success, although I'm wondering whether if it was misted onto dry hair each day (a bit like setting lotion) if that might work. Also I know when peeling carrots it will stain your hands an orangey brown colour so was just wondering about the wisdom of cheap/free home made hair dyes. Any advice gratefully received.

the only proven home hair dyes that I know of are Henna - the powder can be purchased cheaply - but unless you are a fan of DEEP RED hair I wouldnt use it, and Lemon Juice (which lightens hair if you put it on then go out in the sun.
Hair can be tricky to dye successfully! I would suggest that you look for an offer in a local chemist or Supermarket or Wilkinsons for a normally expensive hair dye! or use a semi-permanent in a shade close to your own.0 -
Apart from henna, I think you'll be hard pushed to find a "dye" that stays in for more than one wash.
As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll move it to the Beauty Board to see if you get more suggestions
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I've always heard cranberry juice works well. Here are some instruction from ehow.com I've not tried this as my hair is black and needs stripping to take any color. Good luck!
Instructions
Things You'll Need
All-natural cranberry juice
Hair clip
Blow dryer
1
Wash and condition your hair to remove any oil or residue build up in the strands.
2
Thoroughly dry your hair and brush out any knots or tangles.
3
Tilt your head upside down over the sink and carefully pour 1/2 cup of all natural cranberry juice onto your locks. Work the cranberry juice in using your fingers.
4
Twist all of your hair up on top of your head and secure it in place using a hair clip.
5
Blow dry your hair on the lowest heat setting until all of the cranberry juice is dry.
6
Rinse the cranberry juice out of your hair using warm water.
7
Repeat steps one through six daily to keep the red tint to your hair for as long as you desire.
