How do I make a cuddly toy from a story book?

Options
The title pretty much sums it up. My little girl has a book that she LOVES and I am hoping to make the "snuggly wuggley" from that book. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make one? I have a sewing machine but prefer to stitch by hand to be honest. I have never attempted anything like this before so don't even know where to start.

If anyone can offer me some insights into stuffed toy making I would be very greatful.

Thank you
Kat

Sorry about the amount of photos. I have added every image of it that I have.

I think you've got your work cut out there as a first time sew-er :rotfl:

But as this is for a small child an approximation would do - perhaps get hold of a white teddy and some permanent markers and use the markers to add the different colours? The ear shape wouldn't matter if the patterns and colours were right. Would have to be permanent markers so you could wash it once coloured in order not to have a multi-coloured child!

    Good luck

Ahh, Using a teddy as the base is a great idea. I have a really good charity shop near me too. I would be able to pick one up quite cheaply. Moneysaving first lol.

    Thank you

If you can't get a teddy I think i would be quite easy to do by hand. If you made some templates of the toy (sort of gingerbread man shape), then made four triangles for the ears (possibly from white and using orange fabric pens for the stripes?).

On one piece of fabric add the tummy from a scrap piece of purple, and the pink nose with fabric or pens. Add the facial features and on both pieces the black splodges. Then sew together inside out adding the ears (pointing in) and a few strands of green wool for the hair. Leave a small bit unsewn, I'd leave the bit beween the legs, turn round the right way, stuff then sewn the last bit.

white teddy sew on fleece patches you can pick up offcuts quite cheeply plus use old odd socks to make extra bits to sew on

  • Perhaps have a go at making it out of socks? I bet you could find cow print socks and some purple spotty ones pretty easily, and then ask on the sock monkey thread

There's a really simple teddy bear pattern here for the basic shape. Just modify the ears to triangles before cutting out.

If you use an old white T shirt for the body you could decorate with T Shirt Graffiti markers, £3.49 for 8.

They're brilliant and wash really well. I've used them loads for dressing up and fancy dress type things.
