Selling ring

Options
I have an engagement ring from a failed relationship (years ago). Where is the best place to sell the ring and what price can I realistically expect? It cost £500 in 2000. I live in a remote rural area of Scotland but do visit Edinburgh and Stirling regularly.

I don't expect these cash converter shops give the best price and as I am not desparate to sell for any price I wanted to do a bit of investigation first.

thanks guys

My friend is in the exact same position as you and I think the best thing to do first is get it valued. Get to a jewellers but tell them you want it valued for insurance purposes - if you say you want to sell they might be tempted to lower the value and offer you some cash.

At least then you'll know what you should be looking for it.

As for selling it, I've no idea - my friend has tried but no-one will give a decent price. Was tempted with trying eBay but the fees alone just don't make it worth while.

    Good luck!

An insurance valuation though will not be a realistic value if you are looking to sell, you will probably have to halve it.

As you do want to sell then try a bricks and mortar auction house, they usually give free valuations and can sell the item for you. Just make sure you check the fees etc before you agree to let them sell it.

Retail price of £500 doesn't mean much really.

    Diamond? size, clarity etc?

    9ct/18ct gold?

Retailer it came from? In a sale or normal price?

I've spent 4 months trying to sell my engagement ring with two nice sized diamonds in.

Ebay is a complete waste of time.

Took it to several different local jewellers firstly asking for valuation (put a price of about £800 on it) then if they were interested in buying. All said no thanks, too modern looking for us, try an auction house.

Took it to a local auction house who said it would be difficult because very modern looking but would put it in jewellry auction with a £250 reserve on it. No takers.

In the end I took it to a local pawn shop, didn't know they still existed but very modern, cashier service, rather like going to the bank! Took a look at the ring and offered £260 cash or £290 if i wanted to use it against a loan of that amount?? I took the cash.

It paid a couple of big bills and I'm glad to be rid of it. I know with patience I could have made a lot more but I didn't have a great deal of patience left :o

Good luck with whatever you decide and remember, you didn't pay for the thing in the first place so whatever you make is a profit :D

  • I'm afraid I did pay for some of the ring - came out of joint a/c. One indication why relationship is failed! It was purchased from Ernst Jones Jewellers, 18 ct gold with 5 small diamonds like a half eternity ring.

    Hi,

Been there done that and come out the other side. I had a £1k+ ring that I needed to sell. I had prices ranging from £50 (from one of the gold buying outlets - as they would not value the diamonds just the platinum) up to £400 from a local jeweller.

I had some advice from the shop I bought it from originally and gave ebay a go with a reserve of £450 to cover the extra costs involved. I eventually got £500 so I guess that was the best outcome.

I made sure I took really good pics (used a tripod-borrowed) and a macro setting on the camera (borrowed too), and used a white box so that it looked as professional as possible. (loads of instructions how to make them out of card

    Hope it helps

    Good luck

    Regards
