Food from Skips......

People dont seem to be listening, wether your tresspasing or not ,taking out of bins will still get you a cgarge of "theft by finding" is it really worth it.
Was listening, just though I would try to offer some practical advise if you have to go there. If you have to ask if it is worth it, you probably haven't been that hungry/desperate. I do get that it is theft by finding, but I think most people would take the risk if hungry enough. So so SO tired of being ripped off, and mislead
Hope sharing saves some pain.0 -
it's not always about the money though. i have a perfectly good job, am paid well above average yet i will still quite happily take things out of a skip if it is something I want. it's the waste that disgusts me - we are becoming a chuck-away society and that is wrong regardless of whether you can afford it or not.
I have refubished half my house by checking peoples skips and always find things for friends - all are grateful although they do think i'm slightly barmy (in a nice mad cat lady kind of way!!)
and as for food out of skips - well why not (i'm not adverse to grabbing a couple of sandwiches from the pret rubbish sacks which they purposfully leave out front at the end of the day in the City) -
there is nothing wrong with it and i'd rather someone ate it than it being destroyed or covered with bleach to make it unusable.... and we wonder why the price of food is so high... if supermarkets were forced to act responsibly and not overstock so they have so much waste perhaps we as consumers would see a reduction in our shopping bills, and maybe some people would have the choice of able to shop in a shop rather than go skipping.....Geez if I ever get to the point where I have to steal food from a supermarket skip or go round picking up litter hoping one of them might be a receipt that I can have a whole two clubcard points from I will take some drastic action like.....I don't know.... get a second job?0 -

Hi roh105
In short, yes I would.
I'm not going to let my ethics be swayed by the ridiculous threat of prosecution for taking food that no-one else wants and is going to be thrown away.
And if I were to be arrested then that is something I would have to deal with and is a risk I am prepared to take. I would however make sure that it was made as high profile as possible and also look to get my ethical MP to help highlight the stupidity of it all and try for a change in the law!
Doesnt mean I approve of actually stealing from inside of shops though - but rubbish is rubbish and skipping is how some people manage to survive, is a way of life for others who resent the type of society we are becoming where it's all about the money and not about the people, and last but not least is how some enterprising people have made their money (not from soggy old sandwiches I hasten to add!!).
If you have the time, inclination and are happy to jump in a skip then why not - it's no skin of anyone elses nose....oh right so what your saying is even though you have the money and food in you would still go and risk the charge of theft .0 -

so what wouldnt you thieve then?do you have limits,do thieves have limits? just curious.Im known as the 'Fixer' if you have a problem, come to me and i can fix it for you.0 -
Had to laugh at the thief bit, but yes, I guess technically I am.
Never been tempted to steal from a shop or anyone's home. Always hand in wallets, travel cards etc to the police when I find them (and have been rewarded twice for that so it does pay to be honest)
However when it comes to things that have been thrown away and are clearly no longer wanted then I have absolutely no problem with that.
If there is something in a skip outside a house I will generally ask if I can have it (and have never once yet been told to !!!!!! off!), if it's been dumped on the street then I will just take it and if it's food in a skip then yep I will just take that too
If someone could give me a blooming good reason as to why I shouldnt do it (aside from the ridiculous legal aspect) then I might think twice, but so far the only problem people have is their own disgust, and the shops, well I'm not entirely sure what their problem is - they have already lost the money the moment they chuck it away so I cannot really see what they can object to.
I leave all sorts of thigns I no longer want in my front garden, sometimes I leave a note saying 'I work please take me' and sometimes i just leave it on the fence - I can absolutely guarantee that it gets taken. So someone gets something they want for free, the council spend less not having to pick it up and the landfills are a little bit emptier because it's not just been chucked away and replaced with something newer....so what wouldnt you thieve then?do you have limits,do thieves have limits? just curious.0 -

nothing wrong with a bit of healthy debate. there are plenty of things that other people do that I am sure I would find a bit odd, but it's good to get peoples perspective
and besides, if we don't laugh what else is there to do but cry... and my mascara is not waterproof!!lol fair play.least you have a sense of humour.;)0 -
actions such as removing perfectly usable goods from private property can only highlight the capitalistic nonsense that supermarkets follow, one the one hand they want to 'look' after customers with deals and so on but throwing away food that can be consumed, I understand there are regualtions , but today the world is changing and supermarkets must too. Theft or no theft it doesn't justify throwing away food that can be consumed, some places do organise pick ups from the supermarkets and redistribute to the needy, it needs to be more widespread.0
