Thank you for all of these replies, so sorry I am only just returning to my thread

Lots of good advice - I really appreciate it!
I was thinking around the £100 mark budget wise, I am only wanting something straightforward and not too heavy if possible. Hadn't thought about things like quilting and embroidery but will defintely bear these things in mind when choosing.

I have a Janome 220XT had it since Jan with a lot of use and it has been great! It is a good price, lots of stitches you get more feet with it than a lot of machines. If you can I would recommend buying online from sewing machines direct their service is great and with a lot of their machines they give you a free accessories kit which includes LOADS of thread

Beware of buying lighter machines they are much noisier because they move more heavy machines are more stable.Getting married Wednesday 24th August 2011!

If you're just starting out maybe worth researching and then looking at EBay, Gumtree, Freecycle to get a decent model as cheap as possible to see if its for you.
Personally I have a mid range Janome that I love, I also have my mum's 28 ish year old Pfaff which still works though has its odd temperamental moments (when its feeling unloved or overworked)0 -
Hi There
I too am looking an embroidery /sewing machine.
I have been recommended the Pfaff Creative 2.0 by my local sewing centre and was wondering if any of you good peeps had used it and if so, what you thought of it. Its approx £1600 new and thats quite a bit of money (but am aware like a lot of things, you get what you pay for!)0
