The Tesco Price Check is a con!

I bought some items at Tesco which were cheaper at Asda, no doubt about it and on the Tesco Price Check results they came up as N/A at Asda.

I've contacted Tesco via email and they provided a cop-out response, contacted them again and they say that they won't tell me why the item is N/A as they don't comment on the precise mechanics of the Tesco Price Check and that they 'can't assist me further'!

Tesco Price Check is a con.. anyone else having the same problem? Think I will report Tesco to the ASA as this kind of behaviour is not on.

My original email to Tesco:

17/06/11

Dear Sir/Madam, I used the Tesco Price Check facility on a recent shopping trip, however on the price check results 8 x AMBI PUR 3VOLUTION REFILLVANILLA are showing as 'N/A' at Asda, however Asda currently sell these at 2 for £6 and your price is £3.30 each. Therefore I am owed 4 x £0.60 a total of £2.40 difference as you were more expensive on this occasion than Asda. Please could you send me a voucher to cover the £2.40. Here is a link to the Asda website showing the 2 for £6 on Ambi-Pur 3Volution Vanilla Treat to avoid all doubt; http://groceries.asda.com/asda-estore/search/searchcontainer.jsp?trailSize=1&searchString=Ambi+Pur+3volution+Vanilla+Treat+Refill&domainName=Products&headerVersion=v1&_requestid=54108 Sincerely, xxxxx.

Their first response:

Dear xxxxx

Thank you for your email.

I was sorry to learn that our Price Check website failed to match some items you purchased in our store with a comparable product at Asda. I can appreciate your disappointment.

Although we try hard to match every product in our grocery range, there are occasions when this is not possible. When new products become available, their details may not be immediately available for comparison online, and there may also be times when changes to pack sizes means that products do sometimes differ.

When searching for matches, we compare size, weight, volume and flavour, as well as whether or not the products are organic, Fairtrade, low fat, or eco-friendly. I can therefore only apologise that we were unable to find a match for your product on this occasion, and for the disappointment this caused.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Kind Regards

My second email to Tesco:

Dear Ms. Wheeler,

Thank you for your email however it is not the response that I'd hoped for at all.

The item that I mentioned in my original email (8 x AMBI PUR 3VOLUTION REFILLVANILLA) is directly comparable to those being sold at Asda (see link and attached image) and therefore I am owed £2.40 difference according to the terms of your Price Check promotion (4 x £0.60).

There is no difference in size, weight, volume or flavour and the item is a fragrance so being organic, fairtrade, low fat or eco-friendly does not apply.

Could you please tell me the exact reason as to why you are refusing to provide me with this £2.40 difference?

Sincerely,
xxxxxx

Their second response:

Dear xxxxxx

Thank you for your further email.

I understand that you feel the information that has been supplied in the previous response does not apply to the items that you had purchased. Regrettably however, I am unable to offer further comment on the precise mechanics of the Price Check system and the reasoning applied in this instance.

Thank you once again for contacting us. I am very sorry that I cannot assist you further with this matter.

Kind Regards

    Ggggrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!

" I cannot comment further on the reasoning applied in this instance"!!

Why? Because you have broken your pledge of refunding the difference!

    Utterly frustrating!

  • Or maybe it's because they referred to groceries in their e-mail, and, maybe, ambi-pur doesn't count as a grocery item? If it bothers you that much (I'm sure you haven't opened all 8 already?) take them back and get a full refund. It's a risk you take assuming things like that will work.
