Tooth help please:(

Hi, I'm hoping some of the expert dentistry people on here can give me a little advice, I'll try to make it short.

I've always had trouble with my teeth. A few years ago I had very severe toothache, the dentist removed 2 teeth before pulling out the tooth which was actually hurting so 3 teeth altogether - but you can't always tell where the pain's coming from.

Anyway, I've recently had toothache again in a different area, I thought it was a tooth next to my wisdom tooth which is already covered in fillings but as i say you can't always tell, the dentist had a look, found a small hole in the wisdom tooth and filled it. A week later still sore, so he gave me some antibiotics with a plan to extract the tooth if no better. That was over a week ago, I still have pain, but I don't want the same thing to happen again and lose more teeth unnecessarily - I'm rapidly running out of them!

How can I tell where the pain's coming from? I'm not coping too badly as painkillers work rapidly but the toothache keeps returning.

TIA

It's not really up to you to make the accurate assessment of which tooth is causing the problem. That's the dentist's job.

Sometimes it can be tricky, but with x-rays ant various other diagnostic tests it should be possible.

Very occasionally, it is very difficult. If that is the case, then the last thing the dentist should be doing is pulling teeth out at random.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thanks Toothsmith, perhaps I need to be firmer and refuse to have any teeth pulled until I'm sure where the problem lies. The time before I'd not have cared if he pulled them all out, the pain was so bad!

this time the pain is bearable(ish), and I can go quite a few hours without any so maybe it will settle, I just suspect he's filled a tooth that wasn't hurting!

Will x-rays whack up the cost more than other treatment? (NHS)- I thought he might have done that on my 2nd visit instead of antibiotics.
