hi there ive been kind of stupid. ive never borrowed anything from my bank but i had a direct debit coming out of my natwest current account which i stoped and didnt realise they tried too take one payment before the account actualy closed, now that was back in november and i was getting statements etc, but i never opend them i know this was crazy but i thought the account was dorment. i opend one today and i have charges amounting too 600 pounds and going up daily, im leaving the address what im at and was thinking about just leaving the debt and what not, but i then thought this is another stupid action too take so i phoned debt department today and explained what had gone on and they basicly told me there is nothing they can set up for me and that i had too get in touch with citezens advice, i cant belive they will continue too charge me upto 180 pounds per month for this. i know i have been stupid but i have never borrwed a penny from them, is there anything else you guys could advise me as im going out of my mind and so worried its going up by the day and its going to spiral out of controll. i was thinking of going into my local branch and see if they can do anything. thanks in advance guys and girls for any help given.

Hi
Definitely don't ignore the debt now. I presume you can't afford to repay £600? Could you afford anything in a lump sum? like half of the amount perhaps?
If you cannot afford to pay the debt off I would write to them and explain you made a mistake, didn't realise there was a balance and offering a set monthly repayment based on how much you can afford. In the same letter its worth asking them to freeze interest & charges (they don't have to but they might well agree to).
If you could afford say half of the balance they you might be able to try and negotiate with them to reduce the charges by a 'goodwill' gesture and settle the debt for a lower figure.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
yeah they did say can i pay half at 300 pounds but i recently lost my job and cant pay half. to be honest am not worried about court or a ccj im more worried about the costs going higher and higher its stupid that they do this ive admited my mistake and they are making it harder by making the debt higher. i told them im on jobseekers allowance aswell, il wright them a letter as u said but in the meantime the debt will be getting more and more

I had a similar case at the CAB recently and natwest agreed to write off the debt as the balance was all charges.
Try your local CAB - they will have the contact details of the nat west department that can help.0 -
