Leapster or L Max?

Just wondering if anyone can help me decide which is better out of the Leapster and the Leapster L Max.
Amazon are doing the Leapster for £29.99 and the L Max is £39.99 at Argos. The only real difference I know about is the fact you can plug the L Max into the TV too.
So any recommendations/advice would be appreciated, btw for a birthday present for a 5 year old in January! Thanks

The only difference is as you say, the L-Max can be plugged into the telly and games will be played on the big screen. You can also access a bonus game if you are using L-Max cartridges and you're plugged into the telly.
It's worth noting that the L-Max isn't a replacement for the Leapster as they have recently released some new 'Leapster' games and a new style Leapster console. But all the Leapster cartridges (inc L-Max games) are compatible with the both Leapster & L-Max consoles. So you just need to decide whether to pay an extra £10 to plug into the telly.
FWIW my daughter just has the Leapster and she's had it about 18 months. She has never wanted to play it on the telly. Having said that her interest is starting to wane slightly so I have bought the Leapster TV console from LXDirect for £13 for Christmas to reignite her enthusiasm in the games. But I think part of this will come from having a separate unit which can stay plugged into the telly.0 -
The above poster has answered in great detail but i thought i would just add too. I bought the L- Max for my son in september for his 4th birthday, he plays with it daily. Only ever plugged in to the tv a couple of times, my eldest son has a nintendo DS so my youngest son thinks he's like big bro with his own hand held console!
He has the Cars game and i find it very educational, helps with numbers and shapes, also the L- Max encourages good hand eye co-ordination.Best Wins of 2010 = Apple ipad & £100 Dejager vouchers:j:jJune Prizes = Kids Card game, Miners nail polish set,L'oreal million lashes mascara.0 -
i have the older style leapsters which i purchased for my son (7) and daughter (4) my son plays with his quite a lot and sometimes he puts it down for a week or two then goes back to playing with it, my daughter has a pink one and she also likes playing with hers, she likes the mr pencils learn to write and draw. there are loads of games and even sometimes i have a go to earn more tokens etc for them. i have purchased a number of games from ebay and ebayusa.
i have just got my son the leapster l-max for christmas as his old one is looking a bit worn now with a scooby doo game and a number raiders game, they are on special at woolies online.

Thanks for your help, possibly leaning towards the L-Max as have a £5 voucher for Argos from Xbox bargain!! The prices i mentioned seem cheap but just wondering if they will be even cheaper after xmas, cos I don't need it till end of January.0
