dentistry woes

Im not sure if this is the best place to post this, but it does somewhat come under the banner of debt free wannabe. As you can probably see from my signature we've been working at paying off our debts, which is really good news. Unfortunatly, I have had a sore tooth for a while which gave up the ghost over the weekend. It just fell out. I have an appointment with our nhs dentist, but I don't know if they will be able to replace my tooth. Im a bit gutted since I've always had really good teeth, but I guess its not so bad since Im not in pain and you can't see it when I smile.
Anyway, does anyone know if NHS covers tooth replacement. I have been given a quote from a private dentist for £1850!!! :eek:Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative?

NHS covers cost for dentistry for necessarry dental work.
If you cant see it and youre not in pain, why are you bothered,
it will just heal over and not be a problem even when eating
How did it just 'fall out' teeth dont just fall out normallymake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Hi there
I have serious dental issues and have an upcoming operation that the university hospital is doing for free because I am considered an emergency. If you are not in pain, and you can't see it, then just leave it. I have a missing tooth (taken out) bottom left, nobody can see it, it doesn't bother me and 6 months after it was taken out it healed over perfectly.
Not bad considering the operation is going to take out 5 of my back teeth
I would recommend just leaving it and go to your dentist to make sure there is no infection etc.
hope that helps

I really have no idea how it fell out, I have been in pain from it for a while and while eating a big chunk just fell out and then another so all thats left is some shards. It doesn't hurt normally but if I accidently chew something hard it does really hurt.
I guess Im bothered because there is a bit left there and I don't know if that will cause problems down the track. Plus not having a tooth is really disturbing to me somehow.[STRIKE]£1900[/STRIKE], [STRIKE]£1750 [/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£1685 [/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£1601 [/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£1478[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£1325 [/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£1162[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£1050 [/STRIKE] £970 worth of debt to clear

First you said that it had fallen out and now you say that there are some shards left behind. If there are some shards remaining then it would make sense to get these removed, This should be no more expensive than any other tooth extraction. After that, just let the hole heal up and ignore the fact that you have lost a tooth. As long as it does not show, I, like others, do not see what is the problem. If it is vanity makes you want to get the tooth replaced, then you will have to bite on the bullet and pay.(Probably not the best phrase to have used). You will soon get used to the fact that there is a tooth missing. Most people have at least one missing I suspect.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Well it's totally understandable if you want something there...you say you have shards, I think you're best bet is to go to the dentist and let him see how much tooth you have left as another option is a cap or crown if there is enough tooth there for it to grip onto.
You will have to pay a bit for this but he won't do anything without you agreeing to how much it is plus it won't be anywhere near £1800!!
good luck!0 -
The cheapest alternative is the NHS. At £47 you will have Xrays, Check up, Polish, Descaling, Shards removed, and any fillings. I had a bottom right removed 18 months ago, it does not bother me, nor can anyone see it. My mum had 1 removed years ago, her gap has closed up now, so it's likely in time it will also do the same.0

I would guess you are thinking about an implant at £1800 ish.
First things first ..... teeth do not just fall out. It sounds as if the tooth was badly decayed and all that is left is the roots.
You need to see a dentist, you need a proper check up, you probably need the rest of the tooth extracting. You then need the other teeth checking and x raying to make sure there is no decay in them. You then need to find out what it is that is causing the decay and change your diet and cleaning patterns. You need to have regular dental care and check ups.
When you have your dental disease under control you may want to replace the missing tooth, and if you have your oral health controlled and visit a dentist regularly then it may be an appropriate time to see what can be done. However the NHS is not set up to necessarily do what you want, just what you need and you may well have to pay privately to get one tooth replaced.0 -
What Brooks said. However, I had an accident with a bike about 10 years ago and smashed out a front tooth. I didnt have an NHS dentist as such but I went to my local private dentist in some pain and he removed the bits still in there, took out the root and then capped it off for me. He said he would charge me £650 which I couldnt afford at that point in time, but, that I could write a series of post-dated cheques to be cashed at montly intervals. The cheques were cashed in order and ontime without any messing around. Perhaps you could do something similar?Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

This happened to me and I left it, turned out it had crumbled because I had an untreated abcess underneath and I wound up really poorly with a swollen face and septicaemia when it spread to my bloodstream, so don't leave it.
After that was sorted my NHS dentist removed the rest of the tooth but told me as it wasn't in my smile line the NHS wouldn't replace it. That was fine with me, and actually in the last 18 months the gap has half closed, which has alleviated some crowding issues so my teeth look better than before! The removal etc will cost £47 as it's a band 2 course of treatment.
If you really want an implant I think you'll have to go private.DEBT FREE 3rd Sept 2011

Just wondering, what the alternatives are if you can't find an NHS dentist without a waiting list and you need treatment in an emergency?0
