What about Carrick-a-reed rope bridge, not for the faint hearted though!

Agree with all the other comments about Carnfunnock, (if you are coming up the coast road don't forget a bag of dulse in Carnlough) Dunluce, Giants Causeway and Bushmills Distillery - there is also Ballintoy Harbour and a tower in Cushendall (curfew tower?)

I like Portrush, the beaches are fantastic, Portstewart Strand is also great but you pay to get onto it as it is National Trust. Benone is another great beach. You can take the ferry over to Donegal nearby and then drive back down to Derry/Londonderry where the Foyleside has great shopping - if you are staying in the Maiden City, I could not recommend the City Hotel highly enough - great value and great service
DJWW - cos we won't let it!

Wow. Guys, all these pointers are fantastic - thank you all very much!

So, is the consensus that, starting and ending in Dublin let's say, we should go anti-clockwise round NI? Or clockwise?

I'm having a look at those cottages too, they look lovely!

This always makes me LOL. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Norn Iron is absolutely tiny!!! The distances involved are so short that you could drive the whole way around the 'edges' in a single day.

True, but OP is also driving from Waterford and will be running around sightseeing all day in between all that driving. And don't forget all that shopping!

However, I will be the first to admit I have no stamina;)

Oh yes, I forgot about the driving-from-Waterford bit! :rotfl:

jammin - either direction is fine TBH, hope you have a lovely time xo

Anti-clockwise, I would go from Dublin, up the M1, see Newry then Downpatrick, on to Strangford, cross to Portaferry, check out the Ards Peninsula all the way up to Bangor, go to Belfast park the car and take the open top bus tour around the city, leave Belfast Via Carrick (see the castle and power station) and then coast road up through Larne all the way to Portrush (this is really not to be missed as the scenery is awesome). I'll take a breath here :) North Antrim Coast has a lot to see the whole way around, but rope bridge, giant's causeway and bushmill are all musts :T From there on to the Maiden City (I'm very PC) my home City:) Lots to see and do all around here, if you have time you could take in some Donegal too.
On to Omagh and further on to the beautiful Lakelands of Enniskillen, from there, N2 back to Dublin all this will easily fill 4 days if not a hell of a lot more.

Have a great time while your up here and give us a wave when you pass in the car:)
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:

Do not forget Antrim Coast Road from Larne to Ballycastle, taking in Glenarm, Carnlough, Cushendun, Cushendal. All fairly nice small fishing villages and the scenery in between is fairly good. Ballycastle harbour has a good fish and chip shop, but you might have to wait to be served on busy days. Trip to Rathlin Island is worth it if you have lots of time and like travelling by boat.

  • It depends on what your Singapore visitor is interested in, of course!

If you want to avoid driving for a while, take the ferry over to Rathlin Island - you leave your car at the ferry port. In many ways it's a step back in time, they've only had mains electricity for a few years, but the scenery is fantastic, and I recommend the crab burgers!
