Embroidery patterns

Options
I used to have a set of magazines called Embroidery Magic, with all the patterns that went with it. I have a feeling my ex may have "disposed" of them and I wondered whether anyone can recommend anywhere to get patterns from please?

Thanks very much

try googling 'free embroidery patterns'! but I bought an iron on transfer pencil quite cheaply from 'Shaws' cost under £2 as I recall. I use it to outline a pattern or image onto tracing paper then turn it over and outline again (otherwise the image is 'mirrored') before using a hot iron to transfer the image onto the fabric.
hope this helps - Its ruddy annoying to 'lose' all your precious patterns isnt it?

forgot to say that the make of the pencil is Newey - they make lots of notions for sewing and MAY have some free patterns on their website - lots of embroidery firms do these days.

Let's just say I am not best pleased. :D Do you just get the tracing paper from a normal craft shop?

you can get tracing paper from most shops which sell office supplies - even quite small newsagents often sell it! WH Smiths will certainly have it and you MAY even find it in supermarkets that sell printer paper and stationery. its not expensive either. any craft shop should stock it too.

Or you could use greaseproof paper

yes greaseproof paper is a good alternative (I find proper tracing paper gives a 'crisper' outline - but I have used greaseproof and got good results). its also easier to find and cheaper than tracing paper - every supermarket stocks it!

What is it you wanted to embroider, redlady? I've got loads of stuff, would be happy to scan and email (you'll still need the transfer pencil :D). I've got two (transfer pencils) and wouldn't be without them. I also have a quilter's pen where you can draw a pattern onto fabric and the ink fades over a couple of weeks. Usually not long enough for me to finish the embroidery, but there you are...

When I did a lot of Ayrshire work, years ago, the old embroiderers used to find a made piece that they liked - an embroidered flower, for example - place a new piece of fabric over the top, and rub with a metal spoon. The pattern gets transferred to the new piece of fabric - clever, huh?

If your fabric isn't too thick, you can fix it to the window with masking tape, put your pattern underneath, and use a pencil or chalk or quilter's pen (eh? eh?) to trace the pattern straight onto the fabric.

Actually, was embroidery magic a partwork? Did it have a sampler box? And a pattern of fishes (I embroidered that onto a cushion, I seem to recall)? If so, I had some of those. If you're looking for a particular pattern, I might even have it. Let me know.
