Hi
Does anyone know if your GP can prescribe Corsodyl mouthwash on a NHS prescription? I've been using the Corsodyl Daily Defence mouthwash for the last few years and NEVER had a mouth ulcer during this time (usually get one every month) but at £4 a bottle it aint cheap. Since its a watered down version of the original Corsodyl, just wondering if i can get my GP to prescribe it and then dilute it.
Thanks

Yes, i did ask my GP why i used to get mouth ulcers so frequently...she couldn't really tell me, just used to prescribe Oraldene which took care of the problem until the next time. I do brush my teeth twice a day, floss regularly and see my dentist every 6 months.0

Try asking your dentist... They are the oral medicine specialists.
It may be apthous ulcers , in which case it's just a case of living with them, on the other hand it could be one of over 200 different causes from anaemia, through ulcerative colitis to Betchets syndrome.
To help with diagnosis make a note of how big they are, how often you get them, how long they last and where they occur. Try and book an appointment when you actually have some to show.0 -

I have been prescribed Corsodyl by a dentist, not sure if the rules are different in Wales? I do have Crohn's disease though, (a form of colitis) and frequently suffers from mouth ulcers. Whilst I don't wish to contradict brook2jack as he (?) is a dentist, ulcerative colitis does not affect the entire digestive tract, only Crohn's does.
Has your GP ordered blood tests? These can easily rule out UC/Crohn's or anaemia.

We can prescribe if needed for an active problem but I don't think you would be able to get it on the basis of avoiding paying for it. I prescribe if there is an acute gum problem but not for anything else. That includes if I recommend it for periodontal disease problems. I usually advise getting it over the counter.0

Sorry but one of the typical presentations for ulcerative colitis is ulcers in the mouth http://www.bupa.co.uk/individuals/health-information/directory/u/ulcerative-colitis. Indeed I personally have picked up a patient suffering from this.
Crohns disease may have very distinctive cobblestone ulcers, whilst ulcerative colitis you get more apthous ulcer type of ulcers.
The majority of ulcers have no medical significance but you need someone to investigate first.
NB long term use of "ordinary" corsodyl stains teeth brown.0 -
Home Bargains sell it at a cheaper rate plus they have another brand which is exactly the same ingredients for about a third/half of the price.DFW Nerd 267. DEBT FREE 11.06.08
