This is a standard scam - I was receiving them on a regular basis - even from 'Banks' that I did not know existed - 'Fifth Third Bank' for example.
At the time I had 2 email accounts - one with UkGateway (Tiscali) and one with BT Connect. I have, now, cancelled the UkGateway account and am glad to say that all the 'scam' emails - Banks, CreditCard, On-line Pharmacies, Investment Companies and 'Appendage Enlargement Miracles' have now stopped.
A word of warning - NEVER reply to these emails, or open any attachment. If you have an account with the named bank - go to their main site and check your details that way. Also, report these emails, as abuse, to your Internet provider.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

DFW Nerd # 166 PROUD TO BE DEALING WITH MY DEBTS
  • I received a new and rather disturbing variation on the "phishing" e mail - it purported to be from the Co-operative Bank and offered £5GBP for completing a survey. I forwarded it to the Co-op Bank (details are on their website) as I thought it could deceive some people into taking part - and of course it would ask you to enter your bank account details "in order to credit your account with your reward" (my wording not theirs as I didn't click on the link in the e mail!)
Proud to be dealing with my debts
  • Hi Guys,
Please remember two rules of thumb:

    1. Financial institutions will normally not email you regarding your bank account.

    2. Financial institutions know all your personal details and even if they did email you, they would address you by your name and not "Dear Customer".

    Kind regards,
    Samara

  • However just to confuse the issue Egg do actually send emails. They the normally jusr say that you have a secure message waiting for you, so if its more detail than that then its dodgy.
....another happy bug.........sorry,blogger embracing the simple life
  • I seem to always get them from banks I don't have accounts with rather than banks I actually use! lol!

    Que sera, sera. <3
  • I have emailed egg anyway just to let them know.

I hate the thought that these sort of things could catch vunerable people out and defraud them of loads of money.

I get four or five of these a day to my work email address, some of them make it through the spam filter, most don't.

What's even more bizarre is our department has a generic email address e.g. enquries@blahblahblah which is not manned by any one person as we all have our own personal email accounts IYSWIM. That email address gets LOADS of banks emailing that their bank account has been compromised. Interesting that something in cyberspace, not even a physical object, can hold a bank account these days eh? :D Technology, it's amazing.... ;)

When I had an egg card I hated the way they sent emails from which you could access their web site. It seemed to be asking for trouble from phishers. Personally I never followed their links from emails and always logged on directly. No longer have an egg card.:D
