End of the minimum wage?

Like they'd appreciate swathes of British workers coming to their country, speaking broken Polish with a weird accent, and taking all of their jobs out from under their feet.
only because they can! some people seem to think that some work is beneath them, for instance factory work, so the Polish readily accept these jobs - its a case of if you won't they will and i'm sure that very few of them will work for next to nothing because they are human same as you - with families to feed.0 -

I think you are being very cruel and presumptious on the Polish folk, some of them may not like sprouts and prefer salad instead.;)Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -

I'm Polish and I've always for more than minimum wage. Why some people keep going about it?! It's annoying and unfair on us.0 -

He appeared on Newsnight ten minutes ago.
Appalling / slippery slope. How dare he suggest employers paying people less than NMW (which isn't enough anyway) if they are disabled, have been in prison, haven't worked for a while etc. (how many more of his chums think the same in quiet)
NMW should really be a start and people paid more as time goes by / as they develop / take on more responsibility etc.
Are things really that bad that wages have to go lower than NMW ????0 -
It amazes me that someone will happily claim JSA in the long term, yet turns their nose up at work that pays 'peanuts', even though that amount will still be at least four times what they currently receive!
Not quite, if I claim i'm homeless tomorrow theres no chance that i'll get housed.
I can find my own accomadation and claim HB, CTB etc
or they could find me a place in a YMCA or B+B so thats at least £140+JSA and
Thats £207.50 equivelent income, if I did min wage job take home would be £196.64.
And then i'd still have the whole week to choose to do what ever voluntary work upto 16 hours that I choose to do.
Four times would need to be a income of £800+ a week after taxation.0 -
you could get all the applicants in your office and have an auction for the job. "i'll work for 4 pound an hour," "i'll do it for 3.50 " etc0

Some parts of your idea I like. But what is to stop an employer sacking someone when they become entitled to NMW and hiring someone else for under NMW, to give them a constant line of cheap employees? Of course the employer will say "if you work hard we'll keep you on" to get them to work as hard as possible for naff all wage, then get rid of them anyway. This will continue for a few years until people begin to realise this is all that happens, and stop putting the effort in.
This is common accepted practice in business already, particularly in sales where you cream off the best sellers and get rid of the crap performing ones - ensuring they do so in such a manner that is legal/they don't have to pay redundancy. You hire new ones and start the process over. There are always jobs for energy sales people advertised at the Job Centre. I suspect there are not more positions available, but they got rid of the last lot for not doing as well as the company would like.
Maybe if people under NMW got unfair dismissal protection after 3 months? Employers are not likely to faff around sacking and hiring every three months ?
I dunno I'm just musing really. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

well you may have stolen out jobs but fortunately you left out sense of humour alone. You're Polish, have you ever worked for 10 bob and a bag of sprouts or did the context of my comment go well over your head?0
