tv - cheap entertainment or not?

just wondered where people stand on TV? I was brought up to think of it as cheap entertainment. But since last month I have tried to cut back on the amount of tv i watch drastically (try not to watch any at all but sometimes crumble). I don't know if it is the consequent lack of exposure to adverts (which depress me always, particularly this time of year), or the fact i've also been trying to avoid magazines and looking in shop windows for the same kind of reason - but I have spent MUCH less this last month without really trying....makes me wonder...

I read this book called 'Get a life' a month ago, which talks about how the average person watches up to 4 hours tv a day (think it is american). which if you work full time means you spend half the time you're not at work or asleep, watching tv. SCARY! this book also talks a lot about how tv makes you want things - both the commercials, and the beautiful people and beautiful homes. And how contact with people is so much more meaningful than watching the box. I'm not slagging anyone off for watching tv - i know it can be a lifeline particularly if you're housebound - just wondered if anyone else had had similar experiences?

incidentally i think this book considers internet use in the same light... better go and do something else now!

TV is still less than 50p a day for 24-hour coverage of the five basic channels, plus limitless radio. A bargain in anyone's terms.

If you mean the cost in relation to other things you could be doing instead, then that's up to the individual. TV gives company, relaxation and pleasure to countless millions in our country, and we have the very best service in the world.

Obviously be selective not a couch potato, but think of the old folks who possibly never see anyone from week to week, the bedridden who rely on TV and radio, and let's count our blessings for having it readily available in our homes.

I have no connection whatsoever with any broadcasting company or electrical goods retailer, but I can appreciate a good thing when I see it!
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D
