Just wondering if anyone can help me out on this??
My OH has just been promoted to assistant manager in a retail store, now I know the money is bad in retail all over but she has only got a pay increase of 83p ph which seems horrendous for all the extra unpaid time she has to put in, the more responsibility she takes on and the heavier work load??? poor thing has been grafting like mad this last couple of months, I know its better than nothing and don't want to sound ungrateful but it really isn't worth the hassle.
Does anyone have any idea on what a reasonable salary for retail AM in the North of Engalnd should expect because I'm sure this is unusually low??

Retail pay in management is very poor.
I used to work in a major supermarket, and worked myself up to department manager (with outlook to moving onto assistant manager and so-on) and the pay was about the same increase as you mention. They did however have this unspoken deal where management would work whatever hours were needed, and no questions asked. I didn't, i'd happily stay over if we had people off sick, or around christmas but at no other point did I do any hours past my contracted ones. The store manager sat me down and questioned my dedication, I quickly pointed out to him that sales had increased, staff had higher productivity all since I started, and if I could do my job well with the contracted hours then I had no need to stay over. He agreed, and did get on really well with me, however he was an honest guy and told me I wouldn't be moved up in the ladder in retail unless I was willing to work over my hours for no extra money.
There was a story in the news about Tesco going to Eastern Europe to recruit people, basically because they would be willing to work in management for poor wages and work 70hours a week to do it.
If he wants to stay in retail, he'll just have to get used to it, that's how it is.sPer Mare Per Terram0 -
lol "SHE" I can't see her wanting to stay for much longer. she was hoping for a fair bit more and has already thought about turning it down!!
She doesn't mind the extra unpaid hrs if the pay was half decent in the first place and I know first hand how committed she is to the company.
Oh well guess I wont be retiring any time soon lol!!!0 -
At the time I always thought about how ridiculously seriously some people took retail work, now I have been out of retail for a fair few years I realise how right I was, and the pay is about right. You might not realise it at the time, but it's incredibly easy work, hardly any responsibility and easy promotion.Per Mare Per Terram0

Even though it is badly paid it is probably worth her accepting it to show career development on her CV and to get people management experience, and hopefully move onto something better paid further down the line.0
