Found this solution here but wait for RussJK to comment before taking action.
Look for the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wscsvc] using regedit; if it no longer exists the virus must have wiped it. The link to http://cid-9fb18a384ebfc662.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Documents/wscsvc^564^6.zip will take you to a zip file containing new registry information which when downloaded and installed should fix it after a reboot.
Done all of that...but still i am sighing and maybe very soon crying :'-(. Looks like im going to have to run the back up discs and hope for the best0 -
A big thanks to all of you for the advise. Cross fingers the back up works....worried.com0

Actually I just read a bit closer, and you can't with the 3 disc backup:
You will not be able to use a OEM Windows 7 Factory Restore/Recoverytype of installation disc that came with or created from a store bought computer to do a repair install with. These can only be used do a clean install instead.
If you find a copy of the MSDN Windows 7 64bit install disc then you should be okay for this task. I'll see if I can source a link to a legitimate original copy.

Did you try the System File Checker? Or the Re-Enable program?
Don't necessarily have to do a full reinstall (i.e. one that wipes everything), the point of the repair install is that it doesn't wipe all your files. I've never tried it with the 3 disc backup you do with Asus/Acer etc computers, but you could give it a go following this guide:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html
Yes tried every link you posted.
So now i'm about to run the back up disc. I presume it will give me the choice of just repairing instead of reinstalling?0 -
don't count on it...have you got all your pics/music/etc. backed up before you start ??? It may give you the option, but many of these types of recovery disks, as russ pointed out, will only do a clean install......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
hang on, if it's an asus they have a hidden restore partition which may allow a repair install, think it's F10 or F11 on startup to access the recovery partition on the hdd.... which model asus is it and maybe we can advise further...
edit - sorry, tends to be F9 on most asus models...just checking for repair install option......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

looks like the F9 option should allow a repair install rather than a full wipe... but still back up any data you can first......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
