possible to upgrade processer on existing mainboard ?

As soon as I've posted this I'm off hunting for the documents for the main board. However, I'm hoping you experts can help.

My pc is getting slower than I would like so it's time to upgrade. Belarc advisor says I have the following board (a soltek board I think):

Board: 8363/A-686A
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG 09/30/2002

My current processor is 1.67 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
256 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Main question is can this board run a faster processor ? If so, any idea what the max speed possible might be ?

Any advice gratefully accepted, as I'm not having much luck on google.

albertross, your question has prompted me to check, and found a confusing abberation.

    my computer, properties says 384mb.
    yet belarc reports this :
    384 Megabytes Installed Memory

    Slot 'BANK_0' has 256 MB
    Slot 'BANK_1' has 512 MB
    Slot 'BANK_2' is Empty
    Slot 'BANK_3' is Empty

I'll have to check under the cover coz I can't remember what mem I put in, but 384 sounds right.

why would belarc suggest 768mb ?

if memory serves there a limit by chipset the first one was close to 2 ghz and then the slightly more modern ones could go to 2.2ghz and the final socket as could go over 2.4ghz

frankly you can get a amd socket 756 motherboard for £25 off ebay and there are pleanty of people upgradeing who will sell you a cpu, motherboard and memory bundle for under £100 and an amd64 and that will double your performance

all you do is search for the manufacturer then find your board
