Who uses the high street?

Why do high street shops open 9-5?
These days when everyone is expected to work and working hours are concentrated during office hours, who are the high street shops catering for?
They obviously serve a few stragglers who can fit shopping into their working day but generally those shops are selling their wares to benefit-claiming scum and pensioners.
I live in a town with a population of approx 80k people and in the past three months we've had two butchers and the town's only two pet shops close. I only know of one crappy butcher shop in the town now! Just look at the average high street, pound shops and vacant properties everywhere.
Isn't it wonderful that we pay all those scum bags to feed themselves and they don't even have the decency to do it properly? Instead of using the butcher, they spend all our tax money on cable TV and beer then buy crispy pancakes for their meals.
It's not all the scummy benefit people's fault though, the shops shouldn't expect to compete with supermarkets during a 9-5 day in the first place. What makes them think the !!!!!! would recognise the benefit of nutritious food either?
I really miss being able to buy quality food at weekends. Thank you shop owners for being so complacent and thank you !!!!!! for doing what !!!!!! do.

Regardless of the benefits discussion, I have always found it a bit odd that shops close at the time a majority of people (in my area atleast) finish work! I leave work, have about 3 minutes to buy anything I want from the local mini supermarket before it closes.Per Mare Per Terram0

They aren't sitting on their thumbs all day! They're trying to sell quality goods to people who either can't afford them or don't recognise quality if it slaps them in the face.Regardless of the benefits discussion, I have always found it a bit odd...
The end result is that we're all enslaved to buy mass produced crap from supermarkets, despite the fact that it's now getting more expensive than the local retailers were.0 -

Well surely, if they have a bit of a brain about them, they would open at different times to suit?Per Mare Per Terram0 -
Ah, dehaani. You're such a troll.
FTR, plenty of people who shop during the week aren't on benefits. Some people work from home! Some people work nights! Some people are at home during the day because their partners earn enough for them not to work, nor live on benefits! Some people are carers and parents who can only get out during the day when there is enough public transport to do so! Some people are lucky enough to not need to work!
In addition - and I appreciate this might be a shock to you - but...*whispers*...some people work hours which aren't 9-5. Awful, isn't it?!
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
It's designed with the basic premise that generally speaking, even a full time worker will have atleast 1 day off - generally speaking they will have 2, with which to go shopping. Similarly there's the fact that you have people who don't/can't work (not always "!!!!!!") - so they frequent businesses during the working day
but stop being such a self righteous twerp - the retail sector has to compete with Supermarkets often with buying powers which "standard" chains cannot compete with, the 4 shops you noted primarily will have suffered due to their expensive products as opposed to comparitive prices in a supermarket, i'm sorry, i don't care if my butcher is a jolly ol soul who has been in the community for 40 years, if his prices are 10% higher than Tesco i'm going to Tesco. THAT'S what's killing the "high street" not your definition of "!!!!!!" & ill thought out notion of who the 9-5 retail day caters for.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
Some of us work shifts as well.0

Of course some people work shifts but not the majority in most areas. I did say that, didn't I?Mankysteve wrote: »Some of us work shifts as well.
The shops should be trying to maximise their customer base.0 -
oh dehaani, your recents posts do make me chuckle! On a serious note tho, you do have a point re opening hrs of high streets.
where i live the high street town centre stores are on the same street to the main 'drinking area' ie pubs clubs etc. so it wouldnt be possible for them to open til say 10pm on Thurs, fri, sat and sun as thats when the pubs and clubs are busy... i wouldnt want to be nipping into the florists whilst surrounded by drunken people
My uncle is a butcher and was close to having to shut up shop. He now opens 7am -9pm and does cooked breakfasts and evening take out meals - not pizza and chips but real 'home cooked' meals such as beef stew and dumplings, lasagne and the likes. He even serves veg or salads etc with them so busy workers who are running late home etc can pop in and order their evening meals. He is now turning over 3 x what he was 18 months ago, so maybe you have a point - i feel its the diversity and the extended hours that have produced this turn around for him0 -
What's to buy in the High Street?
Charity shops, banks, estate agents, travel agents etc etc etc.0 -

And all those "some people" cases add up to more than the typical 9-5 workers? Not only that, their collective disposable income exceeds the 9-5 lot? Perhaps you're right but if you are then why are the shops all closing?
Tasteless people buying processed crap from supermarkets are as much to blame for this mess.0
