My God, if you go to Brighthouse you'll get well and truly shafted big time. They were on the TV a few months ago where some poor saps paid about £3700 for a normal LCD TV

I would become a Freegan before I went there.

...CreditExpert say he has a credit score in the mid 900s - almost perfect. He has an overdraft and credit card with Lloyds which are both being paid off, and is part way into a 3 year repayment plan with Creation (Currys), and an income of about £12k a year.

He's about to move out and needs a washing machine, fridge freezer and cooker. Alas, we cannot afford to pay for these outright so we saved up some deposit money and went to Currys thinking he could get a 3 year repayment plan. Our budgeting said he could afford their repayments - but, despite the previous good standing agreement with the finance company, and his near flawless credit history, he was turned down.

We've considered a personal loan or credit card but if he's just been turned down for credit it is highly unlikely he'd get the £1.5k on either of these that he wants to spend on the new stuff.

Can anyone think of any other way he might be able to get the credit or stuff required before he panics the day before he gets the keys and winds up in somewhere like Brighthouse?[/QUOTE]

Stay away from Brighthouse. He will never clear his debts.

  • With debts in 5 figures (so probably almost equal to his annual income!!) he definitely should not try to take out any more credit! I would suggest he should start looking at the Debt Free Wanabee board and start making a serious attempt to pay all that off.

Second hand white goods often go very cheap on eBay, as they are generally for local pickup only. Try a search by distance, and you will be able to see if there is anything available that you could pickup cheap.

ended up applying for credit on £1.7k
For a washing machine, fridge freezer and a cooker? Even if I had £1700 in cash, I wouldn't pay that for three items.

Back to the question. Further credit isn't going to happen with the current debts in place. Can your brother get a higher paid job or a second job? Is your brother quite young as £12K per year is very low these days.

get second hand for a year, you could probably spend £100-£150 or so...
