my son is currently a 1st yr apprentice painter decorator and is only on £100 a week which is between 25-70 a week less than rest of the people in his class at college ,i think there is a minimum of £2.50 per hour for 1st yr apprentices which works out at what he is on,
i also worked for this company and know for a fact that each apprentice before him has got a minimum of £125 a week
thing is what is the minimum he can get next year when a 2nd yr apprentice???? as he is quickly becoming unhappy with being an apprentice when most of his pals are earning a lot more,

Looking at http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/TheNationalMinimumWage/DG_10027201 it looks like it might be minimum wage from his second year.. but it's not amazingly clear.0

They introduced the £2.50 apprentice rate last Oct previous apprentices would have got the NMW for their age.
While under 19 and an apprentice the minimum is £2.50 once over 19 and finished his 1st year of the apprenticeship he gets the NMW for his age at least.
As you are employed by the same people you know if it worth sticking at it for the long term rewards.0 -
he is now 17 , as for me im not with the company anymore and i keep telling him a short term loss for a lifetime career but as all parents on here will agree teenager know better.0

Hi
please see the information below,
From 1st October 2011,
· the main rate for workers aged 21 and over will increase to £6.08
· the 18-20 rate will increase to £4.98
· the 16-17 rate for workers above school leaving age but under 18 will increase to £3.68
· the apprentice rate, for apprentices under 19 or 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship will increase to £2.60
Hope this helps.0
