Removing old '70's fireplace and replacing it

Hi,
We have an awful looking old fireplace and we would like to remove it ourselves and replace it with another one, wall mounted.
We are aware that for disconnecting and reconnecting we will need a gas engineer to do it, but can anyone advise how easy or not it is?
Thanks

hmmm when you say removing fireplace what exactly do you mean,
are you talking about just taking out an existing gas fire and replacing it?
or are we talking taking off a fire surround and mantelpiece?0 -
well, we need to take out the actual fireplace but the surround as well. The surround looks like it is made of bricks so it should be easy to take out, I hope.0

It is an easy job. If it is brick built then just dismantle with a hammer and chisel. If the surround is in one piece there will likely be two small metal fixing lugs - one on each outer side near the top of the surround which will probably be covered by the plaster.Forgotten but not gone.0
