Student Jobs

I'm going to uni in September as a mature student. I need a job while at uni to cover mortgage bills etc.

I don't know what my hours will be in uni but they will change week to week but I will know up to an year in advance.

CAn anyone give me some good suggestions of companies etc to apply or send speculative enquiries to that are good for students?

At present I am a careers adviser (you would have thought I'd know this but none of the young people I advise have mortgages to cover!) but am willing to do retail, admin, whatever!

Thanks in advance

Perhaps some kind of security/ nightwatch job that allows you work evenings? I know a few people who have fit that around other work/ study. One guy on my course used to just sit and watch CCTV monitors and do his coursework, another person works nights in an old people's home so basically gets paid to sleep (she only has to get up when an alarm goes off).

Otherwise anything touristy is good for students- castles, cathedrals, zoos etc because they need a lot of extra staff during weekends and half term/ summer holidays.

Bar work for evenings, retail work would be an option but depends how much notice you would get when your uni hours would change, maybe aldi/lidl as they pay quite well,

When I was at Uni, I had a part time job in a DIY shop. I was only contracted to work weekends, but there was alwasy over time available during my holidays, when I pretty much worked full time.

The reality is it will be whatever you can get! I won't dull you with my story but let's just say finding work as a student is just as hard as finding full-time work..........

So, apply for EVERYTHING you can find, bar, retail, supermarkets, waitressing, coffee shops, cafes, garages, news agents.

I managed to get 10 hours a week admin work in a small start up company that were really flexible with my timetable but I lucked out, not so lucky was that it really wasn't enough hours.

    Good luck!

As a student I worked 25 hrs a week in a call centre. It's possibly not recommended to work that many hours though.

Finding work as a student is easily done. I did bar work too.

Register with one of those companies who need casual bar/waiting staff - there is no obligation to work and you can choose when and where you work. Try Gumtree and Job Centre Plus websites.
