Thanks for your replies - guess I needed a vent more than anything - I've decided to take myself our of situations like the one mentioned that make me feel uncomfortable from now on.Focusing on clearing the credit cards in 2018 :T0

Hi dotty,
Unfortunately some people are like that and expect to be given/bought things because the other person can "afford it". It's your money though and you are entitled to spend it as you like. My mother thinks because I was lucky enough to get a decent job that I should provide things for her, yet she conveniently forgets the 6 years of going back to education the student loans and overdrafts I had to take to get to this point. Talking your way out of some situations may work for a while, but some people need to be told exactly how it is, but it's up to you how you deal with it really.
Good luck
RedIf you've nothing decent to say, perhaps you shouldn't say anything.

Hello Dottyanne
I have just seen that you are posting again. Welcome back.
Glad to hear that you are in a stronger position regarding your income.
It is your money for you to do what you want. Follow what others have done in similar circumstances.

Hi Dottyanne
Glad the rant helped, free MSE-therapy! To make it a lasting solution, why not suggest (to the friends you want to keep) that you enjoy a regular round of dinner parties? That way, each host pays their way, and you get to choose whether to push the boat out or to put together a lovely but thrifty menu.
I did this as a group of 3 couples for several years and honestly we had the best times for the cost of one person's meal out. A bonus was that it made me tidy the house properly on a regular basis
Hugs
