Tech Guys Whatever Happens Club

Options
Bought a PC last year from PC world and took out the whatever happens club insurance. It was only four quid a month and the agreement states "If we are unable to resolve the problem over the phone (they couldn't), we will send an engineer out to repair your product".

As they couldn't resolve the problem I requested an engineer visit only to be told "we don't do that anymore"! They now want me to do a full backup, they will then collect it, reinstall windows and return it to me to spend hours reloading all my stuff.

I have now just sent a letter stating that due to the major change in the agreement, I wish to cancel immediately and as it is such a major change and I wasn't informed, I have asked for a refund of all premiums paid. This feels like a bit of a miss selling case to me.

If you have one of these agreements phone them on 0800 0665833 (don't use the 0844 number) and ask for an up to date copy of the T&C's and make your own mind up if its worth staying with them.

Anybody think I have a chance of seeing any money?

Did they originally inform of you of that change in writing?

No never had any correspondence from them at all and they do have my correct address as they use it as an identifier when you call them.

Their policy has always been to collect and repair for laptops, but an on-site visit for a desktop PC, this is stated in your Whatever Happens information.

They cannot change what you have agreed to without informing you first. I take it that it is a Desktop PC that you have?

Yes desktop. I saw the part about laptops and collection, but you are correct, the next paragraph is for Desktop PC's, monitors and printers and it states home visit.

It may be their policy but I know one salesman who lied about that at the point of purchase. The laptop was for my daughter starting university and was informed the laptop would be fixed at the shop if there were any problems. When the inevitable happened we were then informed no we don't do that it has to be sent away and could be two week turn round, not much good for a uni student. I took the laptop away and paid for the repair which was done very quickly. I phoned PC world head office to cancel the insurance and the very first question they asked me was "are you cancelling due to the policy being mis sold". Iv'e never set foot in PC since. I know I'm only one customer but the've lost a lot of business from me over the past eight years simply through a dishonest salesman.
    It's someone else's fault.

The solution is simple: if you don't buy your PC (or indeed anything else) from PCW, then you won't get sold their useless maintenance package with it.

the 'whatever happens' actually means.... whatever happens, never ever ever let a PC World 'technician' anywhere near it.

And if you do, 'whatever happens', you're bound to need a replacement motherboard...
