i just nearly burnt my house down

i was cooking a fried egg or frying a fried egg?

turned around to get butter out of fridge (intending to make a sandwich)
we i turned back the frying pan was on fire

i stood there like an idot panacking about what to do.

the flames were about a foot high ive never been so scared in my life!!

after debating if i should run with it into the garden i somehow managed to retrieve a table cloth soak it in water and throw it over the pan.

it was like a i was in a trance..

so there snt any damage apart from shaken nerves and ruined table cloth and a knackered frying pan!

now the cause...

my oh was brought up to bleach things that have been used to cook eggs ect
hence he bleaches the frying pan the plates the egg cups the spoons the knives the forks the spatula.

now apparently bleach is EXTREMLEY flammable and even the smallest trace can cause havoc with a bit of gas.

obvious i hear most of you say.. try telling my oh who thinks you have to bleach eveything to prevent them smelling of egg!

i have just rang my father in law and warned him not to do it any more. he has a 13 year old boy would he know what to do if it happened to him?

does any one else bleach things that have been in contact with egg?

phew thanks for reading i had to tell someone!!!!

:confused::confused:

  • Phew, hope you are feeling a bit calmer now. Have a sit down and a cup of tea (and a biscuit, you deserve it).

Have to say I've never bleached anything after cooking eggs, the smell is just in the air (I guess) rather than permeating the pan?
  • i really want a cup of tea but m scared to go in the kitchen!!!!!!

    and i burnt my thumb!!!!

I've never heard about bleaching anything that's been in contact with eggs, totally new one on me!

Glad you are ok and that there hasn't been much damage.
  • We don't bleach anything. We use an anti bad spray on surfaces etc but with a toddler there's no way I'd risk bleaching anything or having it in the house.
I've never heard of bleaching anything with egg on it though! Sounds like a lot or extra work to me!

  • Isnt Bleaching stuff that you eat from abit harmful to your health. Sorry very harmful?

Any traces left on a cooking item then contaminates the food next time you use it.

so basically your eating bleached food.

Eating bleached food in itself won't hurt you if it's a one off, but if it was a regular thing you'd likely end up with a stomach ulcer..

Someone I was at university with tried to grill a piece of battered fish. She decided to close the front of the grill for extra heat and then forgot about it. We then remembered about it when smoke started to come out of the cooker.

I didn't think that you could set fish on fire (there were flames) using a grill but she proved me wrong.

Way back in the mists of time, when I was at school, one of my friends almost blew up the Home Economics Dept.

We were asked to boil a kettle, so he filled his kettle with water, plugged it in...then lit the cooker and placed the kettle on top of the gas hob! The resulting explosion was heard even on the playing fields a mile away.
