Went to the pub the other day.
£3.20 a pint. You'd have to be desperate.
Went to the petrol station the other day.
£1.42 a lt. You'd have to be desperate.
Lots of things are expensive. Tabs being one of them.
In 1978 I was buying bitter 26p, lager 36p Gallon of fuel c.80p.
I have always worked on the basis that consumable items always double every 10 years or about 7% a year.
That would make bitter £2.54,lager £3.30 and petrol £7.30.
As a politician said last week cars are more economical these days so fuel is much cheaper ??? My first banger was 10 years old and cost £400 or £3500 so I suppose they have dropped as have consumer electricals.
I think the problem is that wages haven't kept pace and are generally masked by salary/wage progression.
I really don't know how people afford "tabs"these days must be close to £10 of taxed income packet or 170% of the minimum hourly wage."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Petrol was about 34p a gallon in 1972 putting that and your 80p a gallon into the measuring worth website, on the earnings scale in 2009 (which is the latest you can do) the equivalent value is round about £5.60p Petrol now about £6.25p.
26p about £1.80, 36p about £2.49p
I think music is something that’s has come down in price a full price LP in the late 60s was about £1.50 and the budget ones were about 15s, that would be about £31.50 and £15 now.0 -

Wow, Zep, Floyd, Wacko and the Fab4 must have coined it in 'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. How much was your insurance and road tax?
Compare it to now.
I only say this as my dad has said to me before now, the cost of the cars might have come down, but the cost of putting them on the road is now robbery. Not often he states something is worse now than he had it. He had pretty much everything 10x worse than the young'uns....
.....Though everything was so much better then, apparently. Blocks of butter delivered to your door. No one would nick them. Only one type of butter mind. Blah blah blah.0 -

To be quite honest I haven't got a clue what tax and insurance was.
I brought 4 new radial tyres 155x13 for £50 , it had crossplys on.
The insurance certainly didn't scare me like the figures banded about today for young drivers. It was also just Third Party Fire and Theft, which used to be a lot cheaper than Fully Comp, allowing you to build up no claims. These days there is hardly anything in it."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Do you have a link for that website? Funny how only beer and petrol are fixed in my mind.
Interesting that if you add a 2 more years of 7%, onto the fuel figure you extrapolated, it isn't far off. Spooky that."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

A bit late but here is the link for measuring worth http://www.measuringworth.com/ukcompare/ seems fairly accurate.0 -
Going back to the OP's post.
It suits the politicians to let people think it is the fault of the previous generation for the current situation. They like this, it allows them to make those that don't have a house, job or decent pension blame the general population but of course it isn't the general population that create legislation and run the economy, all of that is done by politicians both in this country and other countries.
I think our politicians have been wonderful since the second world war, they have improved things so much for us ....
Our railway system and road system is the envy of the Germans and the French ! Lol.
Our cars are far superior to German cars like Volkswagen, Audi and BMW - you will hardly see any of these cars on our roads ! Lol !
And as for the Japanese and Koreans, who wants their crappy Sony, Panasonic, Samsung TVs or their Hondas, Lexuses, Mazdas, Hyundais etc Lol !
Computers, phones etc we rule the world here - I mean who would want any of those awful Apple products, ridiculous !
Also motorbikes Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Ducati hardly sell over here.
Nope, you cant blame the banks, the policticians, the managers it's you and me who are to blame for our mess - the next generation will blame you as well.0 -

Clothes are a fraction of the price to back then too....all household goods too. Ironically, years back you could get the house but not be able to afford to put anything in it.0
