outstanding debt search

Hello, some advice would be really appreciated.

My husband and i did a credit check and found 2 surprises! Marlin Financial services, have recently done a "outstanding debt search" on my husbands credit.

Would i be right in understanding that creditors do these particular searches if you are not paying the debt? to flag up to others that he is not paying?? i see also it stays on the credit file for 2 years.

We pay this debt every month, on time without fail. Why would they do this?

I also found out that a debt we have been paying off for the last 4 years, was paid off years ago!! ( my husband moved out in 2007 and literally found every credit card statement and gave it to a debt management company - not knowing that this particualr debt had been paid. no we are back together and iv got to prove it was paid! it was a goldfish card, i beleive barclay card now own them?)

Thank you for any advice
