Thinking about growing up!?

Currently renting at a seriously cheap rate, have about £400 a month over after play money, food, DD's etc, I need some advice as to where to direct that money best with the ultimate intention of it becoming a deposit for a flat/step towards securing a mortgage. I've got some savings but would need to triple what's there before I would consider applying or researching seriously
So a few questions - Is this realistic or will I be ambling along forever?
- How old were you when you got a mortgage and how much did you have behind you as a deposit?
- I'm in a relationship at the moment and we've toyed with the idea of a joint mortgage, would certainly ease the financial burden and stress but I've always been fiercely independent, is it so bad to go it alone?

£400 is a great amount to save a month - nearly £5K a year..and in an ISA you can max your rate tax free
to answer the Q:
18 and £1K (5%)
No not bad to go it alone indeed better until you are 100% - whatever you do, do not get a joint mortgage purely to get on this mythical property ladder....as it turns into a snake if it goes sour0 -
Can anyone else shed some light please?0
