To Throw or not to Throw

I'd really appreciate a little advice.

Finally got round to sorting out my store cupboad ( it's been a long time coming!)

I've found the following

Basmati rice ....best before date Aug 06

California seedless raisins.........best before date June 06

To throw or not .........

Thanks in advance for any advice

  • I wouldn't throw, personally.

Water flows through the mountains for years. As soon as it's bottled, they put a shelf life on it. ;)

I would say both are fine - you could nibble a few raisins just to be sure, but I would guess both things would last for ages! :D
  • Thanks for the replies :)
    very much appreciated

The only one I was really concerned about was the rice ,But I'm sure that will be ok too

Neither have been opened , which I suppose is a plus.

    Thanks again

 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • Thanks Linz...was loathe to throw either out ......have you seen the price of basmati .....

This is another example of food manufactureres putting the wind up people for no reason, rice used to last forever when I was a kid.

I have also had a good clear out today and found quite a few bags of Pasta/Rice lurking in the back of the cupboard, I have saved them as they seem OK and will try and use them up next week.

Did throw out quite a bit though, cream crackers from last year (unopened), cereal that nobody liked, pickled onions gone soft and some cordial that looked yuck.

    Doing the freezer tomorrow!

I did my cupboards and freezer the other day, glad to say I only threw out some empty packets that mysteriously didn't make it to the bin when the food was taken out. I now have a list for shopping and I won't be buying tinned tomatoes as we have 17 tins :o but I knoiw what we need for Christmas now.

Exactly. Worst that's likely to happen is weevils in the rice, but I've never seen any (or in my (by now 2 years OOD) flour).

i would use. as i always thought a best before date was only a guideline anyway.

i only stick to a date if it says use by.
