Credit Confidential - charged for "membership"

Hi,

I wasn't sure which category to post this in, so apologies if it's incorrect.

Around a month ago I signed up to the 30 day free trial for Credit Confidential. I remember at the time being told that as my address couldn't be automatically verified (I moved house about six months ago) I wouldn't have access to the information they hold until I can prove my address.

I couldn't be bothered sending documents off, so I tried to sign up to another company called Give Me Credit who gave me access straight away. I used their free trial, got the information I required and cancelled before payment was due with no hassles.

A few days ago, I noticed my account had been debited for £9.95 by Credit Confidential. I phoned them up to ask for an explanation, and was informed that my 30 day free trial had expired hence the charge.

Surely a free trial starts from when you actually have access to their service, or, what exactly are you trialling?! Plus, if I can't log in to their system how can I cancel as described on their site - "To cancel, just click 'Your Account' and then on the 'Cancel your account' button at the bottom of the screen." Also, I've checked my inbox for any emails from them, and can't find anything. I assume the message that I needed to verify my address must have been a pop-up, so with no email or snail-mail notifications I think most people would have done the same as what I did and simply forgotten about it.

I guess I'm really wondering if anybody else has been caught out by this, and whether it's strange of me to assume that because I didn't have access to any information whatsoever that the trial hadn't commenced and hence I had nothing to "cancel"?

Thanks guys.

They are a pretty dodgy company, that have already had their parent company warned by the OFT on several matters.

  • I have just had the same problem, I signed up for their "30-day Free Membership Trial" never received any log in information (it said an email would be sent to me with activation details) as I didn't receive anything I assumed I wasn't going to be able to use their site and now they have taken money from my account and want me to call ther 0845 number...! I don't think so somehow! I will be contacting me bank to get it refunded or they need to give me 1 months access to the site!

I tried cancelling the direct debit for them though and it wasn't showing on my direct debit list? strange!
  • Same issue with me. No email. Charged 9.95 to my card. Seems like clear malpractice. We should put a complaint to their regulator
  • I have just logged onto my banking and there is £9.95 debited from my account from this company and I have definitely NOT signed up to them, nor heard of them or seen their website before. THIS IS A SCAM! I will be reporting this to the police as this seems to have happened to be a few times in the past month so I think it is someone passing on my banking details.

Also watch out for myloan.co.uk as they have stolen money from me.

Out of interest, did anyone get their money back?
