Mortgages & Benefits?

I have posted this in benefits forum too, and i apologise if this is wrong but I really, really need some advice - please! My fiance and I have been together for about 11 years. 6 of which I have had numerous health problems which have made me unable to work. I am still offically employed by my employer, and through a Income protection plan I am paid a % of my previous salary. I am reviewed annually to see if I still meet the criteria for this. I am also in receipt of incapacity benefit, and Higher rate mobility DLA, and lower rate care component.

We were thinking buying a house until I became unwell. The impact on both our lives meant that this was put on a back burner until, we hoped one day I would recover to the extent that I could go back to my job. It has been 6 years and there are no signs of improvement - in fact things have gotten worse! We are both currently living with our respective parents:o

We are on the local council waiting list - but the current wait is around 11years! We are 33 & 34 years old respectively, and we both feel like time is passing us by. I am also getting to the stage where I believe my partner resents the illness/me and it is having an impact on our relationship.

I think things would be better if we could move out and be together - but atm there is no way that we can get a council property, and renting privately is not an option - as the costs around here are almost as much as a mortgage would be. My real point for posting, is has anyone ever managed to get a joint mortgage whilst on benefits, but with the income protection element of my employment included? I have read a couple of threads which have raised the question if it is possible or not, but there doesnt ever seem to have been a definitive answer. I feel like I am holding my partner back - if I had been well, we would have been married and had children by now. Or he could have been with someone who is healthy and lived his life.

If anyone could give me genuine advice it would be appreciated.

Do you have a deposit of at least 10% of the likely purchase price?

  • After reading your post, I feel that you should be posting this on the relationship forum. You need to sort out your feelings as a couple first, before you can think about buying a house together. Sounds a like your illness will not go away for a while and this will have a bearing on any future plans you make.

    Good luck for the future

Kingstreet - near enough! But we arent looking at immediately doing this, just trying to explore avenues of what we can do, in hopefully the not too distant future!

AMD - I know what you mean, and this thread was to see if anyone was in a similar situ re the mortgage/benefit/IPP thing, and to see if there was any advice on that really. The relationship stuff we are talking through at the moment. :)

These are the only specialists I know who act for disabled people.
