Wedding Photographer

Hi, I am just after some general advice.

How did everyone pick their photographer? We would just like some nice photo's of the ceremony and photo's afterwards, (just a couple of hours) but there are so many photographers out there I don't know where to start!

Any recommendations for photographers in the Hampshire/Dorset area would be greatly received!

Thanks.

not sure if this helps. This is who I have booked for my wedding. The photographer seems really friendly and has a good portfolio

I have just emailed what I am hoping will be our wedding photographer (he had availability yesterday and I have asked to confirm today so hopefully he'll be free and it'll be confirmed!)

I spent a fair while 'googling' wedding photographers in my local area, but to be honest I think you end up with a lot of the very expensive ones, and you may be missing small local businesses, who are just as capable but who just can't afford to pay google the costs to get their website bumped up a search! **Edit added here** I also forgot to say that searching via local classified ads is how I found my photographer - and a 20% discount for mentioning the ad!

For me, the reply I got from the photographer I emailed was obviously personally written, and he seemed genuinely interested in my query.

I suppose there is no 'correct' advice because it depends what you want - for me I have chosen venues and services which are run by people who are genuinely interested in their trade. People who have a genuine in pride in what they do (and who don't just see the word wedding and ££££'s) are the type of people I think it's best to do business with!

I'd also say word of mouth is a good way to find a reliable photographer - try and get recommendations if you can :)
:) Trying to be good and watch the pennies, but guilty of falling off the wagon every so often! :p

best advise someone who you like their style of photos, is in budget and whom you both feel relaxed with don't forget to ask them to see a complete set of wedding pics and get references also ask they whether they themselves will be taking the photos and what happens if anthing goes wrong.

The skill is not in the photography, you expect that to be competent, the real skill is in working people, getting that pose, the ideas for the images, that's what you pay the extra for.
Many photographers have relevant skill technical levels, only a very small handful have the people skills.

I cab reccomend 2. The one we had was AMAZING and for that price you get 2 photographers to cover the wedding (him and his wife) he travels as far as kent, scotland, new york so the location isnt a problem:

Someone who is in your area is a close frind of my sister in law and she is also very good:

Both get booked up very early so I would suggest enquiring sooner rather than later as all (good) photographers are in demand.

We decided ours by meeting with them both to discuss ideas, what we wanted and to look at their work

    Hope this helps?

  • We found ours by Googling "photographer" + the name of our venue. We are getting married in a Victorian house which is very pretty but quite dark inside, so we wanted a photographer who had worked there before. The one we chose wasn't the cheapest (although they have raised the price of the package we got by £400 since we booked, so it worked out accidentally MSE!) but I really liked their eye for facial expressions and good shooting angles.

Personally, I went with one that I'd seen in action before. It's such a big thing, I hate the idea of handing it over to someone that you hardly know, that you've just seen a website for etc.

Fortunately, my sister got married last year and used fantastic photographers. We saw the whole process, through the pre-shoot, to the wedding day, to the final album - and were impressed all the way - friendly, efficient and, above all, took really great photos. They aren't the cheapest, but offer good value - and I'm happy to pay more for someone I *know* can do a good job.

I think a personal recommendation is the best indicator of a good photographer.
