I love it when Barclayscum call to nag my wife. It used to drive me crazy as they would call about 6 times a day. When they call now I just pretend to be an answering machine, of course they know it's not but there is still that 15 second silence when they try to work out what to say. Half the time they ring off but sometimes they do actually start to leave a message...at this point I just laugh and hang up on them.

The calls have cut down drastically now....bit gutted as I got to really enjoy winding them up.

Just out of interest, how far can they force you to go - sell every tiny last thing you possess, or force you into IVA/bankrupcy? DH is a director of his own company so bankrupcy not an attractive option :(

They can force you into Bankrupcy yes, for me it is my prefered option, but that's another story :)

One of my creditors wrote and said they would start Bankrupcy proceedings within the next 7 days, so I wrote back to them and explained how much debt I had, that I was self-employed working from home (like you) and the only assets I had was stock which had a value approx. 10% of the total debt, and the other assets were tools needed for my work which I would apply to keep under Bankrupcy, I then told them if they wanted to Bankrupt me I wouldn't stop them, but by doing so they would destroy any chance of getting payment, and maybe it would be a good idea to let me try to pay some money back before killing their chances.

They didn'y Bankrupt me, but did pass the debt to a DCA who have started County Court Proceedings against me to get a CCJ, they didn't give me chance to offer a payment plan so I'll wait to see what the Judge says on 7th Jan.

That's just one of my stories, so far.

Doing the same with HBOS, they started calling again after I wrote to them (it's a long story but they shouldn't be calling me) so I just pop the phone a couple foot from the TV and they get whatever the TV is running, be it news, postman pat, music, etc. etc.

It's gone from 19 calls last Wednesday to 1 today....

  • Hi, for the last nearly 3 weeks I have had at least 30+ (sometimes ranging to 70-100) calls a day from a 'private number' to my mobile. I never have answered these even though some of the family have ex directory numbers (they now visit or even text!).

Now I have switched the voicemail on but no-one leaves a message. i think it maybe the hounds from the financial establishments. (this is not funny I have been reading the stories - scary!

(i was advised by CAB not to pay any more to any creditor until they write back to me first)

What do I do, I'll be dammed if i'm changing my number, do I answer it or not?

I have the phone set to only ring when a number i know calls.

    Help! It's driving me bonkers!

correct they can apply to bankrupt you but most applications fail if there is a chance of repayng the debt be it £1pm or £100 pm what ever you can afford and maintain

Thanks everyone. I was under no illusions that these people would be nice to us or that our impeccable payment record for the last 5 years would count for anything. Yes, we owe them money but that doesn't make it reasonable or intelligent to hound us - as pp said, harassment is in the eye of the beholder.

We got in touch before missing payments so feel we're doing all we can, but our sticking to our guns that no more money is available no matter how often they call. They're all talking about 'collection[' so I guess that means DCA. We aren't home owners and have one very old car so we're not going to be much use to them. Having said all that I'm worried DH is underestimating how !!!!!! they're going to be to us, but at least we both work from home so he's around most of the time if we do get visitors :( Thank good our youngest is now at school, although I know evening visits aren't unknown. hey ho.

Just out of interest, how far can they force you to go - sell every tiny last thing you possess, or force you into IVA/bankrupcy? DH is a director of his own company so bankrupcy not an attractive option :(
why are you living in what seems to me fear? who is going to call ? you may if very unlucky recieve a call from a debt collector just tell hm this is what you are going to pay and give it to him he is not going to beat you up etc if he raises his voice just escourt of your property but i doubt you will get a visit when i was in debt i got 1 visit for a silly £60 debt an old guy who left when asked , the most dca will do is ring etc if you want to do it by letter do it by letter you have a choice as do they just get on with your life you know how much you can afford now so pay that up it when you can im debt free now and was in debt for 4years, put it all in perspective and dca etc can have no effect on you also change your phone number deal by letter f its your choice
