Just got a letter from Capquest

I got a flag on my credit report last week that capquest had done a search on me, so I was expecting something. Today I received a letter from them in the post ... I am currently undecided whether to open it or send it back return to sender unopened ... Thoughts?

I am currently just about ok with my finances but did have some debts when I was a student 20yrs ago, which I assume were written off long ago as I was out of the country from a number of years after Uni....

Help/advice appreciated.

If you're sure that you have no outstanding debts then ignore or return to sender.

Everything on my credit report is green, either up to date, or settled. There's nothing on record for me thats showing as overdue and as far as I can recall I've been good since returning to the UK about 10yrs ago.

The thing that gets me though is they've done a search on me so they should see that I have nothing outstanding.

I'd open it. What is there to worry about?

What are the debts for? Any idea of value? Personally, I'd open them (BUT NOT CONTACT THEM!) then post back here for advice...!!

20 years - they are certain to be barred... However I believe they can still record this on your credit file (assuming they can prove the debt is yours) - they just cannot enforce the debt any more...

(Edit with post below in mind - Don't admit any liability, give them any contact number, if you do query anything)

I would open the letter - you are always better to face these things and not try and ignore them - Only due to the fact that it would drive me mental otherwise - lol.

I'm fairly new to the whole debt area so please check my advice with others on the board.

They are most likely bully boys who buy out of date debts and attempt to bully the debtor in to making a payment and re-opening the debt.
A lot of people do fall for it unfortunately.
Life is hard and tough and you did not leave the bullies behind at school, they are out here in the big world as well

Ok, I've just opened the letter, its about my defaulted student loan.

I left university in 1992 and never contacted student loan company (SLC) so it's statute barred unless SLC filed a CCJ against me. I honestly do not know if they did as I moved around a a lot from '92-2001.
Is there any way to find out if a CCJ was filed against me, almost 20yrs ago?

Please correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Either ignore it or send them a letter telling them it is statute barred?

If there was a CCJ on it, then I would have thought CrapQuest would have mentioned it in the letter? They wouldn't usually miss the chance to use something like that as an extra threat.

If there is a CCJ on it preventing it being statute barred, then CrapQuest would have to provide documentary proof of it.
