Sourdough starter mixtures

Does anybody know where it's possible to buy online or elsewhere, a sourdough starter mixture that's already fermented and ready to go? It's a long process and a couple of times we've had a starter mixture go to waste because we've been away & unable to keep it going.

Tried asking Waitrose who bake their own sourdough bread but they don't sell the starter mixture.

They're not far from me. I'll have a read of their blog.

Bakery Bits sell sourdough starters - have a look in the 'ingredients' section. They have some fantastic stuff for bakers too :)

There are various groups of people with an online presence who will send dried starter out to people for the cost of postage.

I've never tried to obtain a starter this way, here's one site that makes such an offer.

I've not had any problems keeping my starter in the fridge since it was only a few weeks old, so you don't need to be around for too long to get one set off.

Did you know that it is possible to freeze a small amount of starter that you can refresh over a couple of days before using it to bake with? This might be a solution if you are worried that your home made starter will die if you are away for more than a couple of weeks.

You would feed your starter as normal (though it can be a reduced quantity of water and flour), leave it at room temperature for an hour then divide into portions of one or two tablespoons in either a bag or foil and pop it in the freezer.

Two days before you are ready to use the starter for baking, take out the frozen starter and 'feed' it as you would normally, but using warm water rather than room temp or cold. Feed as normal the second day, then on day three it should be lively enough to bake with.
