Haldanes Supermarkets

Have visited local Haldanes Supermarket in Kelso and there is very little stock on the shelves, roughly about half filled. There are all sorts of rumours flying round what is happening, is it just this branch or are other shops affected? I believe UGO is part of the same group of shops. This shop was useful for home delivery so has anyone any ideas please. Need to know if I should start booking a slot for Asda or Tescos home delivery service.

Hi, we had one in the town near me for a while - it was only open for a few months (prev a Somer*field store) and it suddenly shut.

Thanks for the reply, people started to worry when they closed Dunbar after 6 weeks. Kelso has a Co op and Lidl but thankfully they are building a Sainsburys , due to open late Summer. The problem with Haldanes , its more like a Spar Shop than a supermarket. People have voted with their feet and gone elsewhere. The CEO, Arthur Harris is taking the Co op to Court saying that the shops were nothing like the Co op had said, but I think the problem was that customers preferred the Co op /Somerfields brands better than Heritage which they now stock, the prices are dearer because they do not have the buying power, so people took their custom elsewhere. I hope for the staffs sake there is a big turnaround or somebody is buying them out if the rumours are right We still need supermarkets like this , especially if we have another Winter like the last one, have not got over that one yet!!!0

We were in the one in Wick last weekend and it was the same story. We felt like we were in Soviet Russia with all the empty shelves, it was ridiculous.0

Hmm, someone was saying they had serious limitations on what they could order in.
Yes I remember shopping in Bulgaria a few years back. There is a rumour that Tescos have bought it, they lost out on the big site at the top of town, its got to the stage where people are now going to bigger towns because they are so frustrated. Why did Safeway ever sell up, that was my favourite shop.0 -
Thats another thing, the Haldanes website is down but the UGO Stores website is still working, rebranded Haldanes stores and the Netto Stores he acquired just adds to the mystery.0

The store in Ramsey, Cambs closed two hours early tonight. Has not had a main delivery since last Wednesday. Notice on door says will reopen
tomorrow. I wonder!0 -
I get the feeling there might be money problems, usually if lack of money they cant order stock as firms want cash(i believe stock is delivered on credit, same thing happened with wik save) rather than deliver stock and find the store/firm has gone into administration and cant pay the supplier0

Kelso was suppose to have a delivery today but would have made very little difference. According to staff there was a cash flow problem and very tight budgets. Cant understand why he bought the Netto Stores when in my opinion he could not compete with the big boys.0

Belper store has been having similar problems regarding deliveries.
They've also had security guards in the store 24/7, due to problems with the landlord, in an attempt to keep the store from being seized by the bailiffs.
Belper store also closed two hours earlier at 20:00 last night and the staff were told that on Tuesday 14th the store would close for the last time and they would be made redundant.
