voucher embarassment at asda!!

my mum works at asda and was given a warning today to pass onto me! they usually take up to ten percent in vouchers at the checkout (but not from sainsburys magazine etc.) but the self scan doesn't seem to have a limit although it buzzes for assistance if vouchers reach £5. i've taken advantage of this in the past, especially when spending less than £5 by putting in more than 10% of the cost in vouchers.
they know i'm her daughter and she was quite embarassed to be given the message! apparently the staff on the self scan have been told to watch coupon usage and that anyone spending more than 10% or using coupons that they shouldn't will be marched to the security office!!
there's some confusion because they said i'd taken the mickey yesterday with excessive coupon usage, but i only used one coupon for 35p and that was well below 10% of my shop so perhaps they are confusing me with another customer whose antics are more dubious than my own :rotfl:
she doesn't know if this is a local thing or company-wide. just thought i would mention it because they warned her that it will be very embarassing for me if it happens because everyone will think i've been caught shoplifting!

If any of the Supermarkets did this to me I can assure you it would not be me who would get embarrased. If you use a coupon and the till accepts this then there has been an 'offer and acceptance' by the store to accept the Voucher. That is my understanding of the English Legal System. Maybe somebody more qualified could confirm this.
To force you to go to a security office they have in my opinion made a citizens arrest ie you have not gone willingly. There are a number on here who have different letters from Supermarkets saying that this is an acceptable practice, so unless you have used dodgy coupons/money I can't see how you have done anything wrong. Only yesterday I used £20 worth of Coupons at a till (not self service) and this was acceptable. If I was stopped I would bring a private prossecution against the company involved and I'm sure the ones who would be embarrased would be the store in question.
Good Luck All - but stay legal.

My local Asda now has a sign on the self-scan tills, stating that assistance must be sought before using coupons.0

That is fair margaretb. If they are 'unable' or 'unwilling' to distinquish between coupons on products that have actually been bought and those that haven't, and they wish to check first, they are giving prior warning. However if they gave no warning and then took you to a security office, against your will, that would be something else.

I always have probs on the Asda self-scan, well ever since those amazing £5 superdrug ones that were scanning!
Last week I had a coupon for butter and surprisingly I had a tub of said butter and the self-scan went into lock down and needed the SA to come over and help me.
I also had a prob when I had a £5 unilever coupon and was told I could only use vouchers to the value 10% of the total bill. But I had over £5 worth of unilever goods... the SA just didn't understand what I was tryng to explain!!! And I felt like a right idiot as she screamed at me at the top of her voice.
Asda self-scan -pah!Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.0 -
Methinks perhaps its your Mums way of telling you not to do anything that might put her in an embarassing position at work.If I was in your position I wouldnt use these vouchers there any more. They may have confused you with someone else but that doesnt help her.Anyway,a person would have to have a deliberate intent to do something "illegal" rather than just submit the wrong value of vouchers.0

Went in to the local Asda myself yesterday on a mission to get rid of a few vouchers (all valid may I add). Didn't kick the backside out of it and was looking for about 20% off.
Anyway filled up trolley with stuff mainly cheap things like water etc and spent 20 odd quid. Handed over £2.85 in vouchers and the lad scanned them no problem. Enter some snotty young bird who grabs coupons and says "I'm sorry but you can only use vouchers if you buy the product". Fortunately I hadn't paid so at least I had the pleasure of telling her "Then you'd better put it all back then".
Went to Mr T and had no problem. So for all the calling we do at Tescos for me they are better.0 -
Often receive conflicting information at several Asda stores. At my local store in Chatham, sometimes they accept 10% in coupons on my total shop and other times there are problems, but I have checked the policy with management and also shop at other stores (Greenthithe, Beckton and North Hykeham). They do accept up to 10% in vouchers, but will only accept three of the same kind of any 'Asda' Voucher (there is often confusion and some staff try to apply the ruling to all vouchers, but I always ask to speak to a manager if I have any problems).:icotbaske0

I can't help but think that the stores have a point, that you should only use the voucher if you are buying the product. Food manufacturers aren't wanting to lose money and not even have people buying the product. If you manage to use a coupon without buying the product, then well done and you should see it as a bonus. But to complain when this is not the case, I think is in bad taste.
I have to wonder, is all of it worth the hassle? Getting worried as you enter the store, having to try several stores to find one that will accept your coupons, dividing your shop into two, getting shouted at by sales assistants, having to speak to the manager on a regular basis...
Just my opinion, but don't get me wrong, I know its all with the aim of saving moneyWe're all pawns in the game of life!!0
